Many of the top competitors running the 2012 London Marathon have met before at races in the past – especially at the previous World Championships Marathons and past London Marathons. Among the men, defending champion Emmanuel Mutai has been effective against others in the field. Others have seen various successes against the other runners.

In the women’s field, defending champion Mary Keitany can often stand at the top against any of the others – and she has the raw speed to easily win if she doesn’t go out too quickly as she has at some other races – but the pacers at London will help. Edna Kiplagat also stands above many of the others – but ultimately, the race will come down to who is the best over the day and not who was the best in the past.

Here’s our complete head-to-head listing of elite runners in the 2012 London Marathon. Past performances of these men and women against each other can’t necessarily predict who will win the London Marathon, but it does help us to understand who might be stronger than the others.
