2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon - Women's Preview

Last Year's Top 2 Women Return

For women's marathoning, two marathons, London and Chicago, have stood up as the races that consistently set out the best and fastest times... London seemingly has more money than it knows what to do with and recruits as many of the best men and women as are available and then provides pacers that push the runners to world record pacing - with the result that many burn out but some achieve greatness. Chicago recruits a strong field for its fast course, provides good pacing, but also runs its women together with the open field.... Unlike the trend at many of the top marathons to start the elite women's field thirty minutes early so that the dozen or so women are running without men - Chicago starts its women at the same time as the rest of the race. We know that the women prefer this - and we'll surmise that the extra energy of being in a large race and surrounded by many more runners (the men) running their pace - as well as good pacers - encourages and ensures a faster race. We like it too...

In 2012, the Chicago marathon win came down to a sprint with Atsede Baysa beating Rita Jeptoo by a single second, 2:22:03 to 2:22:04 - both personal bests for the two women. Both Baysa and Jeptoo will be returning to run. For Jeptoo, 2012 was a return to prominence...after winning the 2006 Boston Marathon and running finishing third in 2008, Jeptoo did not run another marathon for 3-1/2 years and did not pop up on most radar screens until the close finish at Chicago in 2012. After the last Chicago, Jeptoo returned to win the 2013 Boston Marathon - we'll expect that she is continuing to improve her form and is our favorite.

Merima Mohammed, whose 2:23:06 from the 2010 Toronto Waterfront Marathon gives her the third fastest time in the field, has had a good 2013 thus far... nearly setting a course record while winning the wet and windy 2013 Houston Marathon and then finishing in second place at the 2013 Paris Marathon in 2:23:14. Also in the field is Jemima Sumgong, who had a breakthrough run at the 2013 Rotterdam Marathon winning in 2:23:27.
