DONATES $50,000 TO THE HUNTSMAN CANCER INSTITUTE
Money Raised Will Help Fund the Fight Against Cancer
Salt Lake City, June 14, 2004 The owners and organizers of the Salt Lake
City Marathon and 5K were pleased to present a check to Huntsman Cancer
Institute at the University of Utah (HCI) for $50,000 after running a
successful inaugural race in late April. The Salt Lake City Marathon & 5K
donated $10 for each marathon runner and $5 for each 5K participant, in
addition to proceeds from the pasta party. Race Director Greg Reid
reported that over 6,000 runners participated this year.
Chris Devine, CEO of Devine Racing, a seasoned marathoner, business owner
and event manager has always dreamed of staging this marathon in Salt Lake
City and was extremely pleased with the success of the race and the ability
to partner with HCI this year. The best part of celebrating our success is
being able to contribute a significant amount toward cancer research, he
said.
Huntsman Cancer Institute was honored to be chosen as the beneficiary of
the Salt Lake City Marathon this year. Cancer patients throughout the
Intermountain West will benefit from the $50,000 donation made possible by
the efforts of the runners, the organizers, and the volunteers who made
this event such a tremendous success, said Dr. Stephen Prescott, executive
director, Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Huntsman Cancer Institute is the premiere cancer research and care facility
in the Intermountain West. As a National Cancer Institute-designated
clinical care facility, HCI doctors and scientists conduct cutting-edge
genetics research and treat patients in a caring environment. A 50-bed
Huntsman Cancer Hospital, adjacent to the Institute labs and clinics, will
open in July, 2004.
Slated for the second running in April of 2005, the Salt Lake City Marathon
& 5K, themed Run, Bump & Boogie, is destined to become the most spectacular
destination Marathon & 5 K in the country. A prize purse over $100,000
immediately propels the Salt Lake City Marathon & 5K into the top ten
