             By the Numbers: 2018 TCS New York City Marathon 
                     Becomes World's Largest Marathon

New York, November 6, 2017-There were a total of 52,812 finishers at the 
2018 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 4, making it the 
largest marathon in the world.

Below are some highlights and statistical information from the 2018 race.

The Field

Note: All finisher numbers and results are unofficial pending race results 
review. Final official results will be released later this month. This data 
is based on registration information provided by individual runners.

- 53,121 starters
- 52,812 finishers
- 30,669 male finishers
- 22,143 female finishers
- 129 countries represented
- 50 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico represented
- 1,229,354 total New York City Marathon finishers all-time (48 total, 
1970-2018)


Winners

Male open race winner: Lelisa Desisa, 28, ETH, 2:05:59

- Men's podium Lelisa Desisa, Shura Kitata, and Geoffrey Kamworor ran the 
second, third, and fourth-fastest performances in race history (2:05:59, 
2:06:01, 2:06:26)
- Four American men finished in the top 10, tied for the most since 1982 
(Jared Ward - 6th, Scott Fauble - 7th, Shadrack Biwott - 9th, Chris Derrick 
- 10th)


Female open race winner: Mary Keitany, 36, KEN, 2:22:48

- Keitany won her fourth TCS New York City Marathon in five years, 
recording the second fastest time in history in the women's open division
- Three American women finished in the top six for the first time since 
1978, and four American women finished in the top seven (Shalane Flanagan - 
3rd, Molly Huddle - 4th, Des Linden - 6th, Allie Kieffer - 7th)


Male wheelchair race winner: Daniel Romanchuk, 20, USA, 1:36:21

- Romanchuk was first-ever American and youngest athlete ever to win the 
men's wheelchair division
- Romanchuk was first to cross 20K mark, earning eight bonus points on the  
Abbott World Marathon Majors Series XII leaderboard


Female wheelchair race winner: Manuela Schär, 33, SUI, 1:50:27

- Schär's second consecutive TCS New York City Marathon victory and third 
consecutive Abbott World Marathon Majors race victory (Berlin, Chicago)
- Tatyana McFadden was first to cross 20K mark, earning eight bonus points 
on the Abbott World Marathon Majors Series XII leaderboard


Top American finishers:
- Men's Open Division: Jared Ward, 2:12:24, 6th place overall
- Women's Open Division: Shalane Flanagan, 2:26:22, 3rd place overall
- Men's Wheelchair Division: Daniel Romanchuk, 1:36:21, 1st place overall
- Women's Wheelchair Division: Tatyana McFadden, 1:50:48, 2nd place overall

About the TCS New York City Marathon

The TCS New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world and the 
signature event of New York Road Runners (NYRR), the world's premier 
community running organization. The race is held annually on the first 
Sunday of November and includes over 50,000 runners, from the world's top
