Nevada Wide Open Marathon de Mayo collection of races takes place. A
marathon, half-marathon, marathon relay, 10K, 5K and the Kids Progressive
Marathon funnels runners and walkers through out the city. An entire
weekend of activities takes place over the Cinco de Mayo weekend ranging
from a book signing with author and motivational speaker Dr. JoAnn
Dahlkoetter or an opening reception of world-class artist Ken Freeman to a
Cinco de Mayo Party to the race day activities including a finisher's
concert staring Al Stewart. Lacy J. Dalton will be singing the National
Anthem to start the runners in the morning. The News 4 Heath & Fitness
Expo, on Saturday, offers the latest Marathon and Running/Walking
technology including clothes, running shoes, equipment and furniture, as
well as, seminars by well-known industry experts on fitness, health,
running, training and wellness.

The Nevada Wide Open - Marathon de Mayo celebrates Cinco de Mayo in a
special way … with health, fitness, athleticism and achievement. The
Nevada Wide Open Marathon de Mayo benefits the Marathon de Mayo
Foundation Fund but other charities and non-profits are using the marathon
as a fund raiser as well.

"Marathons are powerful events when it comes to raising money for
charities," says Douglas Collins, director of The Marathon de Mayo
Foundation Fund. "We have established the Marathon Foundation Fund at the
Community Foundation of Western Nevada to provide grants to organizations.
In fact, there are five different ways that local charities can work with
Marathon de Mayo for fundraising which include pledges for runners,
volunteering, Health & Fitness Expo booth, participation in our media
campaign and inserts into our race packets, and finally, direct grants from
The Marathon de Mayo Foundation Fund."

Most think that marathons and half-marathons are done running … the truth
today is that a lot of them are walked! The fastest growing group of long
distance participants in marathons and half-marathons is walkers. Reno's
own, Nevada Wide Open Marathon de Mayo is inviting those that would rather
walk a marathon or half-marathon to do so. The only rule of the road is
that after six hours participants need to "head for the sidewalks". Of
course for those racers that still want to run, well run baby run! Details
are listed on the marathon's Website at www.marathondemayo.com or by
calling 775-825-1727.

"The roadways for the entire 26.2 miles of the route are closed and Reno
police and Washoe County sheriffs are keeping them safe for our
participants," says Doug Collins, co-producer for the event.
Marathoners are among the fastest growing sports enthusiasts in the United
States. Currently there are more than 3 million runners participating in
marathons each year.

The Nevada Wide Open - Marathon de Mayo Marathon course begins and ends
under the world famous Reno Arch on Virginia Street. Race Director Fred
Holabird has run more than 100 marathons before his hip replacement
surgery.

"The marathon course is a large loop with a smaller one in the middle,"
said Holabird. "We run along through Reno's historic neighborhoods, around
Virginia Lake and then across Windy Hill for some awesome views of the
city, valley and snow-capped Sierra Nevadas. Then, it's off through Reno's
horse country, and the South Meadows Park and winding about the Double
Diamond soccer-mom-area before heading along the eastern valley of the
city. The final three miles are along the beautiful Truckee River leading
into downtown Reno for the finish under the arch. The Half Marathon is an
out and back to Windy Hill horse country. The10 K runs to Virginia Lake and
back, while the 5 K participants run out along the Truckee River toward
Idlewild Park. All of the races start and end under the Reno Arch."
