The London Marathon Charitable Trust 2017 review

The London Marathon Charitable Trust has awarded more than £3.3 million to
69 projects in London, Surrey and Northamptonshire throughout 2017, making
the total amount of money awarded in The Trust's history to more than £67
million.
It has been a hugely successful year for The Trust beginning with £1.02
million awarded to various projects in February, including £300,000 to The
Royal Parks towards improvements to the outdoor sports facilities in Hyde
Park and Regents Park. The funding is aimed at improving the quality and
range of sport and physical activity facilities available to local
communities in the City of Westminster.
Following February's bumper announcement, more than £835,000 was awarded to
projects in May, including £117,246 to Chestnut Grove Academy in Wandsworth
towards a new three court multi-use games area with floodlighting and
all-weather surfaces. The facility will be available for use outside of
school hours for community groups, among them the charity Football Beyond
Borders which uses football as a tool to engage disadvantaged young people
in positive activity.
Surrey based sports projects received a total of £265,000 in July with
Camberley RFC awarded £30,000 to fund a new self-contained female changing
room for the improvement of facilities for women and girls at the club,
while also encouraging others to join. West End Bowls Club in Surrey Heath
benefitted from £100,000 to extend their current clubhouse to offer year
round short mat bowls and low impact exercise classes aimed at getting
older people more physically active.
November saw the announcement of another £635,000 grants, pushing the total
awarded by The Trust this year to over £67 million. Among the November
grants, Towcestrians Sports Club received £150,000 towards the purchase of
an additional eight acres of land for the development of multi-sports
facilities in South Northamptonshire.
Alongside the multiple new grants awarded this year, The Trust also
witnessed the much-anticipated opening of The London Marathon Community
Track at the London Stadium, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The Trust
provided the biggest single grant in its history, £3.45 million, to
construct the Track and were there to assist it's opening in October.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, recently said: "The Virgin Money London
Marathon and Prudential RideLondon are massive highlights of the year…but
what often fails to get the recognition it deserves is the vast amount of
support the London Marathon Charitable Trust provides for our communities.
The grants they have announced…will make a big difference...and huge thanks
must go to everyone who has contributed to The London Marathon Charitable
Trust."
Of the 69 grants, £2,337,514 were awarded to projects in London boroughs,
£775,149 to projects in Surrey and £199,999 to projects in
Northamptonshire.
