Garden Spot Village Announces Preliminary Marathon Results
Bryan Morseman, 28, of Bath, N.Y., Sets New Course Record
NEW HOLLAND, Pa. - April 12, 2014 - Bryan Morseman, 28, of Bath, N.Y.,
finished first in the sixth annual Garden SpotVillage Marathon on Saturday,
April 12, with a record-breaking time of 2:25:33. He is the first runner to
finish the course in less than 2:30:00 and bested the previous course
record of 2:32:39 set by Lowell Ladd of Eagleville, Pa., in 2011.
Liz Fones, 42, of Fogelsville, Pa., finished first in the Women's Open
Division and 33rd overall, with a time of 3:29.52.
Michael Rossi, 51, of Warrington, Pa., won the Men's Grand Masters Division
for runners 50 years old and better, with a time of 3:24:41. Susan
Armstrong, 55, of Ogden, Utah, was the Women's Grand Masters winner,
finishing in 4:01:24.
“It has been gratifying to watch support for this event grow year after
year. Members of the running community are spreading the word about the
beauty of the Lancaster scenery and the hospitality they're shown by staff
and volunteers from Garden Spot Village and the surrounding community. The
event just keeps getting better, and this is the best year ever,” said race
director Scott Miller, himself a marathoner, who is also chief marketing
officer of the retirement community, which organizes and hosts the
marathon.
The Garden Spot Village Marathon is believed to be the first marathon
hosted by a retirement community. Beginning and ending on the community's
104-acre campus, the USA Track & Field (USATF)-certified course runs along
rural roads through scenic Lancaster County, Pa. The Garden Spot Village
Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
To encourage a broad range of participation, the event recognizes
individual achievement in five-year age categories to ages 80-plus, and the
course remains open until the last participant has finished. The oldest
finisher in the marathon was Eugene Defronzo, 78, of Cheshire, Conn. The
youngest marathon finisher was 15-year-old Henry Womble of Lancaster. On
the eve of the race,Garden Spot Village hosted the inaugural Lancaster YMCA
Kids Marathon, which drew more than 125 participants ages 6 to 12.
First-place marathon finishers in each of four categories won cash awards:
Men Overall,Women Overall, Men's Grand Masters (50-plus) and Women's Grand
Masters (50-plus). The Garden Spot Village Marathon is unique in that the
masters awards for runners 50-plus are the same amounts as the overall
awards.
