Press Release - Berlin Marathon - 7/13/23

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Absolute World Class Athletes at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON

- Kipruto challenges Kipchoge
- Chepkirui versus Assefa
- Elite athletes and amateurs
- Race entries

This year's BMW BERLIN-MARATHON will take place on September 24. This major
running event is one of the most prestigious marathons in the world. SCC
EVENTS as organiser expects more than 45,000 runners from about 150
nations. In addition to the huge field of amateur athletes, the world's top
runners will also meet in the German capital to compete.

Eliud Kipchoge returns to Berlin

Last year Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) broke his existing marathon world record in
Berlin. With a time of 2:01:09, Kipchoge pulverized his previous best of
2:01:39. This marked his fourth win and his second world record at the
Spree metropolis. The Kenyan appreciates the fine organisation of the BMW
BERLIN-MARATHON as well as the fast course. Whether he will be the first to
cross the finish line just beyond the Brandenburg Gate again at the end of
September remains to be seen.

Amos Kipruto with big ambitions

There is at least one runner who is hoping to have an impact on how
Kipchoge runs his race. None other than the winner of the TCS London
Marathon 2022 , Amos Kipruto, is facing off against Eliud Kipchoge. The
Kenyan not only won the London Marathon last year, but also stood on the
podium as runner-up at the Tokyo Marathon 2022. If we take a look at the
30-year-old's development, we can expect an exciting battle between the two
running behemoths along the 42.195 kilometres through Berlin—possibly even
a race with historic sports value. In 2018, Amos Kipruto finished second
behind Eliud Kipchoge at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON.

Tigist Assefa expected to have another strong performance

In 2022, Tigist Assefa set a spectacular course record on the fast streets
of Berlin. Starting then as an outsider with a previous best time of
2:34:01, the Ethiopian woman ran a remarkable race and won the BMW
BERLIN-MARATHON in 2:15:37. At the time, the 26-year-old achieved the
third-fastest time ever run, an Ethiopian national record and a world best
time for the year. In 2023, Assefa will look to repeat her victory in
Berlin, hopefully with a similarly terrific performance.

Sheila Chepkirui with high-class goals

Sheila Chepkirui also knows a thing or two about Berlin records. The Kenyan
provided the sporting highlight at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2022.
Despite freezing conditions, she won the spring race with a world-class
course record of 65:02 minutes. At this year's London Marathon, Chepkirui
impressed with a time of 2:18:51, which was only good enough for an
unfortunate fourth place in a strong field. She is aiming for the podium at
the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON and is considered Assefa's strongest competitor.

Running is a social movement

"Of course, we are very happy about the commitments of Sheila Chepkirui,
Tigist Assefa, Amos Kipruto and Eliud Kipchoge. For SCC EVENTS it is again
an international statement to be able to present the absolute top of the
world next to a fully booked field of participants. Where else can
participants and spectators enjoy such a combination of world-class and
amateur sports? For us, this is also an opportunity to inspire—after all,
running is a social movement that we want to serve with all our events and
opportunities within the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON."

Opportunities to participate

While registration to participate in the 49th BMW BERLIN-MARATHON race
entry lottery has closed, there are still opportunities to secure a chance
to participate. Through our charity partners and our official tour
operators, there is still a chance to secure a starting spot for the BMW
BERLIN-MARATHON 2023. The registration for the Inline Skater is still open.
