New York City Marathon 2002 - Overview

The weather for the 2002 running of the New York City Marathon - temperature in the low 402, light wind, clear skies: it was nearly perfect for the runners and perfect for the spectators.

After the September 11 tragedy, the race was run for multiple reasons. Of course it was the NYC Marathon, one of the great marathons in the world, and also the USA Marathon championships. But, this year many runners were running for those who had been lost in the tragedies, for friends, for America or for world peace. As a matter of strength, only a few didn't show up for the start of the race. 98 countries are represented here today, with some 10,000 international athletes participating. Security was tight - but the race went off on time.
