Weekly Highlights: Marathon Results from 4/28 – 5/4

​The weekend of May 3–4, 2025, saw a series of remarkable marathon events across the globe, showcasing exceptional athletic performances and record-breaking achievements. Among these, the BMO Vancouver Marathon stood out, with Dominic Arcel clinching the men’s title in 2:14:32, followed by Tristan Woodfine at 2:16:51 and Japan’s Yuki Kawauchi at 2:18:16. Kawauchi, renowned for his prolific marathon participation, added another impressive finish to his extensive record. In the women’s race, Dayna Pidhoresky led the pack with a time of 2:35:05, ahead of Lindsay Lamrock and Claire Sumner. The event attracted 6,879 finishers, making it one of the largest marathons of the weekend.​

A record turnout marked Sunday’s BMO Vancouver Marathon, now recognized as the largest marathon in Canada. What began in 1972 with just 32 finishers has grown dramatically, with organizers estimating that more than 25,000 participants from over 60 countries took part in the marathon, half marathon, 8K, and kids’ races.

In Toronto, the marathon witnessed Phil White securing the men’s victory in 2:23:58, with Lloyd MacKinnon and Cesar Moreno Quiroz completing the podium. Ana Laura Fray, at 48 years old, delivered a standout performance in the women’s category, finishing first in 2:50:40, narrowly edging out Emily Setlack . The race saw 3,006 participants crossing the finish line.​

At the Sombrero Marathon in Santa Clarita, California, Jason Ganley won the men’s race in 3:27:02, with Jason Voumazzo (3:31:43) and Dominik Varela (3:41:28) completing the podium. Sierra Turcotte led the women’s field, finishing in 3:36:30, followed by Nicole Hamilton (3:52:10) and Anna Weaver (4:06:46). The event is known for its festive atmosphere celebrating Southern California culture.​

In Jacksons Point, Ontario, the Georgina Spring Fling Marathon saw Brent Scheibelhut take the men’s title in 2:34:26, narrowly ahead of Jack Smith (2:35:32) and Jonathan Bradnam (2:41:20). Kristin Joudrey won the women’s race in 3:01:54, with Cathy Maggiacomo (3:11:12) and Emily Mattei (3:12:52) rounding out the top three. The marathon is a certified Boston qualifier, attracting competitive runners aiming for personal bests.​

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, hosted its annual marathon where Mulgeta Birhanu Feyissa claimed the men’s title in 2:14:28, narrowly defeating Milton Rotich (2:14:41) and Ian Carter (2:18:31). Feyissa, an Ethiopian runner, boasts a personal best of 2:09:56 and has been a consistent presence in international marathons. Jane Bareikis led the women’s race, finishing in 2:35:59, followed by Aberu Mekuria Zennebe (2:37:00) and Megan O’Neil (2:37:27). The event had 3,784 marathon finishers.​

In Cincinnati, Ohio, the Flying Pig Marathon saw Sean Ryan triumph in the men’s race with a time of 2:22:41. Ryan, an accountant, trained during tax season, dedicating a few hours each day after work to prepare for the marathon. Bridger Altice (2:26:05) and Ethan Davis (2:28:05) followed. Tori Parkinson won the women’s race in 2:40:06, with Emma Bell (2:50:57) and Daniella Townsend (2:51:12) completing the podium. The marathon had 4,699 finishers.

The Lincoln Marathon in Nebraska featured Jackson Caldwell winning the men’s race in 2:21:58, ahead of Abraham Talam Kipkemei (2:22:33) and John Cleary (2:24:12). Taya Skelton led the women’s field, finishing in 2:54:09, followed by Kaci Lickteig (2:58:18) and Rachel Gerlach (3:05:33). Lickteig is renowned in the ultrarunning community, having won the Western States 100 in 2016.​

In Fort Collins, Colorado, Calvin Lehn secured the men’s title at the Colorado Marathon with a time of 2:30:56. Patrick Haneberg (2:39:29) and Russell Wolfe (2:41:14) followed. Lehn has a background in track and field, with competitive times in the 5K and half marathon distances. Kealan McNally won the women’s race in 2:55:42, with Amber Matzoll (3:00:14) and Megan Umrysh (3:02:17) completing the top three.​

The Tacoma City Marathon in Washington saw Cameron Johnson win the men’s race in 2:35:18, followed by Zachary Schroeder (2:45:50) and Mark Albanese (2:46:35). Kate Landau-Olmstead led the women’s field, finishing in 2:42:25, with Elizabeth Hulbert (3:18:25) and Sarah Goodnight (3:20:08) rounding out the podium. Landau-Olmstead is a former professional runner who has made a successful return to competitive racing.​

In Conway, New Hampshire, the REVEL White Mountains Marathon featured Welch Jefferson winning the men’s race in 2:28:28, ahead of Wang Xianrong (2:32:00) and Daniel Murphy (2:32:38). Sadie Smith claimed the women’s title in 2:52:16, narrowly beating Evaline Ouellette (2:52:32) and Jeanne Carrier (2:53:48). The marathon is known for its scenic course along the Kancamagus Highway, offering breathtaking views of the White Mountains National Forest.​

Adelaide, Australia, hosted the Festival City Marathon where Fraser Darcy won the men’s race in 2:28:36, followed by Tim Hewitt (2:31:33) and Adam Mainey (2:38:18). Darcy is an accomplished trail runner with a UTMB Index of 782, indicating strong performances in ultra-distance mountain races. Kate Baker led the women’s field, finishing in 2:43:51, with Lisa Tyack (2:57:49) and Dimity-Lee Duke (2:59:55) completing the podium.​

In Kalamazoo, Michigan, Seth Essling won the men’s race at the Kalamazoo Marathon in 2:45:36, ahead of Brad Schmidt (2:51:16) and John Sidwell (2:52:08). Morgan Benoit led the women’s field, finishing in 3:15:23, with Rosa Haag securing third in 3:21:56. The marathon is part of the Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon weekend, which includes various race distances and community events.​

The Three Forts Marathon in West Sussex, UK, known as “The Tough One,” saw Jonathan Tyler win the men’s race in 3:15:22, followed by Nik Barter (3:26:41) and Luke Shoham (3:28:04). Kelly Clark led the women’s field, finishing in 3:54:59, with Helen Tingey (4:05:29) and Suzanne Cormack (4:10:10) completing the podium. The race features challenging terrain with an overall climb of 3,450 feet and supports local charities, including the Ferring Country Centre.​

In Belfast, Northern Ireland, Tilahun Nigussie claimed the men’s title at the Belfast City Marathon with a time of 2:13:38, ahead of Aaron Hanlon (2:27:07) and Stephen Connolly (2:29:30). Millicent Kibet won the women’s race in 2:38:31, narrowly beating Lalla Aziza Alaoui Selsouli (2:38:51) and Gladys Ganiel (2:45:47). The marathon had 5,218 finishers, making it one of the largest in the UK.​

The Chicagoland Spring Marathon in Schaumburg, Illinois, saw Scott Kulm win the men’s race in 2:33:06, followed by Jay Renaud (2:39:24) and Akshay Murthy (2:39:50). Sarah Harden led the women’s field, finishing in 2:47:10, with Erin Czuprynski (3:06:37) and Stephanie Kies (3:12:02) completing the podium. The event is known for its post-race celebration featuring Giordano’s deep-dish pizza.

In Eureka, California, the Avenue of the Giants Marathon featured Brooks Hanson winning the men’s race in 2:50:26, ahead of Conor Grady (2:54:46) and Mitchell Sanders (2:56:47).
