Race Details

Essentially a loop course, this USDA choice certified route starts in William Land Park - home to the Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town for children, and a nifty nine-hole golf course - running through its grassy landscapes for the first 1.5 miles. The course then winds through one of Sacramento's nicest residential neighborhoods to 4.25 miles, turning slightly industrial for a short period. Live music will divert your attention through this section as you'll hit riverside Miller Park near mile 5. The next 2 miles head through the Sacramento Marina before joining a bicycle path heading south along the Sacramento River. After leaving the bicycle path near 9 miles, the route continues south into the very scenic South Land Park residential neigborhood via Riverside Blvd. The course turns right onto Piedmont Drive near 9.25 miles passing several beautiful homes before reconnecting with Riverside Blvd. around 10.25 miles. The next 1.5 miles lead back to William Land Park where you'll take a right on 13th Avenue and then continue for another 1.3 miles to the finish. Flat and fast, the Sacramento Cowtown Marathon course contains only tow short uphill grades both in Miller Park around 5 miles and 7 miles. The marathon course loops twice. The course is a Boston Marathon qualifying course.

It was great to run the Cowtown Marathon

I came from Old Germany to do my fourth US marathon (after NY, Boston, and Honolulu) in Sacramento. After return to my home, I wish to thank Rich Hanna, his team, and all of the volunteers for the excellent job they have done. Special thanks for making it possible that I could run with my personal chip and - more importantly - for arranging such a beautiful weather on running day. :-) The course was fast and very well marked; however, it was (unfortunately) without spectators on most parts of the course. The results were published quite quickly, and the massage after the finish was a real delight. The only three points that were not so positive to me are: 1) In the second loop, the marathon runners had to find there way through the mass of walkers who sometimes were walking in groups beside each other, and so creating "human walls" and blocking the roads. (They should be advised to walk behind each other on the right side at all times.) 2) There were lots of sweet soft drinks available in the marathon tent, but no plain mineral water (a nice female volunteer got me some from somewhere). I also missed some healthy food - sandwiches and tacos are not everybody's thing after having done a full marathon! 3) It was a bit disappointing that no finisher certificates were provided - or did I miss something?? In general, I can recommend that all runners do the Cowtown Marathon!!

Great event and got a PR

Rich I really enjoyed the marathon. There were lots of aid stations and lots of cheering people! Volunteers were excellent. It was fast and flat, and also quite shaded. I shaved 14 minutes off of my PR! One change you might want to consider is starting the 5K people 60 minutes after the start of the marathon for less congestion. I liked that variety of food at the finish. Chocolate milk and tacos were very tasty, as well the special sandwiches for the marathoners. Overall, I give this one two thumbs up! Could be improved.

I love Sacramento. It is a great place to spend a weekend. To improve this Cowtown event: (1) Have more at the expo. That was like a neighborhood 5K with a really good tent. (2) The bands should either play or go away. At least half were not playing. (3) Pass out awards before food, or allow paid runners to re-enter the food area. That was confusing and frankly rude. I would run this again, but not if Cowtown can't do just a bit better.
