Beautiful scenery, beautiful people

I have done a number of large marathons in the US including Boston and NYC - huge crowds, lots of energy, etc. This was the first small marathon I have run, with a total of around 75 finishers, and it was the best experience I've had running. This was the most scenic 26.2 miles I have ever run. The first half is nice and flat, sweeping by vineyards, sheep farms and eventually Cape Kidnappers. Breathtaking. The second half literally takes your breath away through a series of very challenging and steep climbs. There's a hill that goes from the base of Craggy Range winery that's like the first hill on a roller coaster... you wonder when you'll get to the top! Not a PR course no matter how hard one trains. The people in NZ are awesome and I can't say enough about how nice it was to chat with fellow runners. Water stops were sufficient, but if you are a Gatorade drinker, strap on a belt or carry a bottle. This race isn't about spectators - it's about being with your thoughts (or your iPod mix) in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I'll consider making the trip halfway around the world to do it again next year.
