"HILLY race; NOT a BQ" (about: 2023)

This is the first year for this marathon, so I will give them a bit of a break. I hope they take constructive criticism and work on some of the weak areas.

First, this race was advertised as a Boston Qualifier and still is on different sites. The week of the marathon, runners got an email that said because of circumstances beyond their control, the race did not receive certification to be a BQ. I'm sure for some people this was a major disappointment and seems very irresponsible. I hope if people pulled out because of this, their money was refunded.

Second, and worst of all in my mind, this was a hill-fest. I did not see specifics in the pre-race material, but they did say it was a challenging course. I have read that races with 800-1000 feet of elevation gain are considered hilly courses. St. Joe had over 1600. These hills were no joke. One right after another, long and brutal. Maybe people will say tough luck, you signed up, but I think this course was unfair. 26.2 miles is tough enough, it doesn't need constant hills to offer more 'challenge.'

Hopefully, they'll get better at some of the other things if they continue to put it on. Hydration was an issue as you never knew what drink was where, watered down, tiny amounts. Race shirt was all cotton with a huge decal right in the middle- good luck running with that for any distance.

There was good, too. Workers were friendly, crowds were enthusiastic, lots of gels at aid stations.

Just know, if you run this, get ready for climbing!

Why not up 8th or 7th west on hall street to 6th? Ran 5K only.
