"Great except for the wind" (about: 2021)

Running into 20mph headwinds from miles 7-13 and miles 20-26 killed my race. I finished but not with the results I hoped for. The organization was great, the course was flat and closed to traffic, but if you're not used to running into headwinds, this is NOT a PR course. Also, we had great running temps in the 40s, but two days later it was 90. The weather is a wild card.

"Flat, fast, fun and friendly!" (about: 2021)

I loved this race! The directors thought of every detail to make it a memorable and enjoyable experience. I witnessed all the runners being treated as winners.

First off, the course itself. The marathon/half marathon route is not only flat as a floor, but it is run on the entire width of asphalt roads on a 2 loop course that is closed off to car traffic. This is in contrast to many races where the course is on concrete narrow trails or streets with some lanes allowed for cars. The scenery is beautiful farmland, lakes, and the friendly cheering faces of the community. There are just the right amount of turns for variety and a FAST race--too many turns slow you down and can add to your actual race length if you do not run the tangents perfectly. The turns were clearly marked. The race begins in the town of Valley, Nebraska, heads south to the village of Waterloo, Nebraska, then back to Valley. Very simply: one loop is the half marathon, two loops is the full marathon.

The volunteers and the people of Valley and Waterloo were kind and happy to have us! As I got to the start, the main Valley town sign said 'Welcome Marathoners!' There was plenty of parking at the school nearby the start. Race volunteers carefully directed us to our corrals. There were no lines at the many port-o-johns...also it was nice to have portable hand washing stations. I was happy to see Covid protocols in place--runners had to be masked before and after the race, temperature checks, multi-wave starts, distancing in the corrals, etc. The volunteers were helpful before, during and after the race. There were 4 aid/fluid stations on the route and the volunteers were eager to assist the runners. And there were some volunteers on bicycles as well for leading and monitoring the runners. The volunteers could not have been more gracious and helpful. I was also thrilled that the locals along the route camped out in their front yards to cheer us!

Finally, it is unheard of to have a small town race like this to attract big name elite runners! It was an honor to be running in the footsteps of Stephanie Bruce, Caroline Rotich, Rory Linkletter and many others. It was a personal honor as well to be running along with ALL the participants in the full and half marathon.

This is a must do race. If you want to PR or qualify for Boston, run this race. If you want a great first race experience, run this race. If you want to see the beauty of Nebraska in its people and its rural landscapes, run this race.
