Being from Iowa, I was excited to run this race. What I experienced left much to be desired and I would recommend that the organizers drop the marathon in the future and focus just on the half and 5/10K races. The marathon seemed to be an afterthought for the Crandic races and it showed in the course, the attention to detail, and the crowd. Iowa City and Cedar Rapids have much to show off, but this course doesn't run you through any of those interesting areas - this course is surprisingly boring. It also has some massive, long hills at miles 2, 14, and 23. From too few porta-potties on the course to confusing parking instructions to some crumbling road surfaces, this race will disappoint those who have run a finely-tuned race like Eau Claire or Fargo. It was a cold morning for the 2019 race, but crowds were very small and very subdued. In the end, this race didn't show off the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids areas very well and I was crushed by that (they truly are great cities). On the plus side, they had frequent aid stations and the volunteers and police officers along the route were a great example of Iowa-nice. I've never written this about a marathon before, but I would recommend skipping this one unless organizers can make massive modifications.
