 "Nice unique Missouri marathon" (about: 2022)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 There's something to be said for small well-organized races, particularly on trails where you aren't constantly checking your pace or dodging other runners. For my Missouri marathon I happened upon this one and am very glad I did. Only reason this isn't 5 stars across the board is I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking there'll be spectators along the course. Many pros: -Nice to not need to get into town the day before for packet pickup. Everything was extremely smooth in the morning as far as that was concerned -Very friendly volunteers and fellow runners -Runners are able to wait inside (which was greatly appreciated in the 20 degree morning) until heading out to the start -Course takes you through a nice variety of surroundings. Wasn't ever bored despite running alone for much of the race -Good swag, good post-race eats, and best of all free photos. That was a nice surprise Cons, not many: -Nothing to be done about this but it was COLD (for this southerner at least)... my Camelback straw/valve were frozen shut for the first couple miles. First race where i never took off the jacket. Lost a glove and my fingers went numb for several miles. Temps never crested 40 I don't think -Again, you're not going to get any spectators here. Not necessarily a con for me at all, but some would classify it as such Course: There is a good bit of wide, flat, 'chat surfaced' (per website - seemed like tiny gravel packed down) greenway, punctuated by fun stretches of single track. The first stretch is Bluff View, which takes you up to - you guessed it - a bluff with a view. Surprisingly scenic one at that. You come back down, then pretty immediately turn back up into the hills. The Rock Hollow portion is mostly FUN single track that winds in and out of ridgelines, gullies, etc. As advertised on the website, plenty of 'rocks and roots to keep you present.' Eventually this dumps you back onto the flat chat surface, which you follow to the 15 mile aid station. The next stretch was in my opinion the toughest - the Cedar Bluff trails were rutted, with steep pitches and horse manure. Also a funky tunnel that forces you to hobble in an awkward half bent stance. When this loop is (mercifully) over, there is a nice stretch of mostly flat single track that winds through a widespread forest and carries you alongside the river for a while which is nice. Once you come back to the aid station on the return leg you have a nice flat run to the finish, ~4 miles. A good opportunity to empty the tank if there's anything left on that side of the Wall... In short: Neat course, intimate atmosphere, great option for Missouri if you're doing the states and enjoy the trails | |

 "Great early winter marathon" (about: 2019)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I signed up for this race because I was looking for an early Winter trail marathon. The pictures on the website looked very scenic but I was not prepared for how beautiful and diverse the scenery would be. I am not sure what my favorite part of the race was, looking over the bluff, weaving in and out of he hollows or running by the river. It was all very beautiful. Nice small race with friendly participants and great, helpful volunteers. The amount of aid stations was perfect. As an out of towner, I was worried about being able to follow the course but it was very well marked and the briefing before the race was helpful. I appreciated the use of the indoor venue before and after the race.I even got a hug from the race director after finishing as a back of the pack runner. I have nothing negative to say about the race. Great course, well organized, great volunteer. Top of the list for marathon experiences. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 This course starts from a school on a paved trail. You run down to the Al Foster trail. Al Foster is a flat, wide, hard-packed limestone. About two-miles in you turn to your first technical trail. This runs eight-ish miles than you run another transition to a second tech trail. Then a final transition to a third branch trail. The final leg is run back on the Al Foster to finish at the start. I think there were 3 or 4 stops. Overall, I really enjoyed this run. |
