"Small and enjoyable run through the North Woods" (about: 2021)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This was my second running of the Ely Marathon. A beautiful course with more hills than you'd expect. Well organized and worth the long drive to Ely. And, yes, it's a draw for me because my last name is Ely! Nice to get a medal with my name on it!!

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Unique to canoe country, beautiful time of year to be in MN, absolutely wonderful people. Race is not too big and not too small, perfect size. Very well supported.

"Half: challenging course, beautiful scenery" (about: 2015)
3 previous marathons
| 1 Ely Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 Yes, Ely can be a little hilly. Gorgeous scenery, fair number of fans, tons of support, water-potty stops quite frequent, great finish line. Only complaint for us halfers: don't bus us out so darned early. Take the fullers out, then go back with the same busses for the halfers.

"Fantastic Inaugural Marathon" (about: 2015)
50+ previous marathons
| 1 Ely Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I had met Wendy at the Grandma's marathon expo and she spend time answering my questions, and then responding quickly to any communication about this new marathon. The organization was fantastic: 1) the bus was there to take us to the start when then they said it would be, 2) packet pick-up was at the start so you did not have to come get your packet the day before, 3) ample porta-johns for the amount of runners, 4) pacers were available to help motivate you along the way, 5) 14 aid stations were more than enough given the weather conditions - and they had water, Gatorade, and GU and gummy bears at some of the aid stations 6) fantastic volunteers, 7)and a beer garden at the finish - so bring a little money for beer that is provided by the Jaycees - $1 for first beer with coupon in packet. After the marathon take a walk down the main street. The Boathouse was a nice microbew, stop at Zups and take home some potato sausage; Grilled Cheese Emporioum has a nice delicious lunch, etc.,. I will do this marathon again some day and try out a few more places. Next time I plan on spending the Saturday night there to see a little more of the town. Thanks Wendy and the people of Ely for putting on a great inaugural marathon. |
