"flat race along a highway through the desert" (about: 2022)

I ran Buckeye because it's close to home and weather this time of year is perfect for running. Flat course along a divided highway gives you time to zone out and watch the cactus. The volunteers were great but I only saw a couple of spectators. If you don't need a big crowd, this is a fun race with good organization.

I've run 45 marathons and glad to say Buckeye was one of them. I found it refreshing to run in the peaceful desert on a relatively fast course. I was extremely pleased with the organization and support; just like a big marathon but not fighting the crowd. The competition was great, the finish line reception was great too. Thanks for holding this fantastic event.

"Very small marathon. Well organized." (about: 2017)

So I flew in from Chicago to do this marathon. I am trying to do 50 marathons in 50 states. This one was very economical as it was an 80.00 entry fee and 283.00 dollar hotel and flight (Radisson Airport North was only 35.00 a night) from Priceline. So I jumped on this as soon as I can.

Pros
- This was the smallest marathon I have ever done and I have done 9 so far. If you like small and organized marathons then this is it.
- Well organized.
- Gatorade at every 2 miles? Yup. Awesomeness.
- I liked having the packet pick up at the start.

Cons
- I felt like I was running through an apocalypse. Coming from Chicago, it felt like I was running through a course that was filmed on Terminator. It was all desert and cactuses. Although it was nice at first, it started getting boring. It was on mostly one stretch of road.
- Well this course was advertised as being downhill. This is true as my Strava said it was. But it didn't feel like it and there were many rolling hills.
- I know the past reviewer liked the finish line festivities. I actually though it lost a star. I understand it was small, but really there was nothing there. Food was lacking and I didn't know where to get water. There was no one there to give you water. Once I got to the cooler they did have Gatorade and Water. There was a beer lady there in a truck and I was not sure if she was there for the race or with a friend. But I asked for a beer and I got it. It looked like an apocalyptic war took over the finish line. There was just nothing there.

Again, this was a very small marathon and I would recommend it if you are looking for a very small, economical, and organized marathon. This race was so small that I actually placed 3rd in my age group with my slowest marathon time of the year by 13 minutes. My time was 4:23 I think.

"It has great potential" (about: 2016)

The good:
- The packet pick-up was smooth. There were three or so vendors, one of which sold energy gel.
- The volunteers at the expo were great in terms of giving directions on getting to the race and tips on local attractions.
- There was a post-race massage tent that offered complimentary 10 min massages
- There was a Photo booth for free on-the-spot printed pics
- There was a great announcer (of the awards etc)

The not so good:
- There were only three porta potties (for 109+ runners)
- Despite having a chip system, the race used gun time for results and age group awards, which is highly unusual in this day and age and was not communicated on the race website. Although the finish line results screen and announcer had me as 1st in the F45-49 AG, the online results have me as 2nd. This is because I happened to be on the potty line when the race started so I began 3+ minutes after the gun. This cost me the first place in my AG, which they gave to a runner with a net time of 2+ minutes slower than mine. This is a problem/inconsistency on the part of the RD.
- The race is misleadingly advertised as downhill. 90% of the course is rolling hills!
- The post race food was not substantial enough for a marathon: banana, Gatorade, bagels. Some protein would have been great.
- Runners were asked to park at the start and shuttled back from the finish after the race. Parking at the finish would have been a lot better.
- Although this is advertised as a Boston Qualifier, they use gun time and potentially hinder runners ability to qualify for Boston since everyone cannot possibly start at the exact time that the gun goes off.

Hassle free packet pickup before the race. Nice to see a race that starts on time. Water and Gatorade every two miles up to 22 then every mile. Smooth asphalt pavement so you don't have to keep your head down. Very little non marathon traffic and police presence at every intersection. Spectators would travel the route with you and cheer you on. Great post race festivities for all ages. Only downside was I missed the GU stops at mile 8 and 16. Got some at the 22. Special Kudos to one of the volunteers ( Jessica ) for getting me back to the car for my flight home; which I made. Perfect running weather and an easy course to BQ.

Perfect if you're looking for simplicity. Very friendly volunteers, race day pick-up, starts on time, huge mile markers, plenty of water stops, great goody bag, medal, and shirt and well-priced. Zero spectatorsjust beautiful desert on a very quiet, paved road. Very humble, very accessible, and a reminder what running's all about. Great weather and good timing before the holidays get herehighly recommended race!
