I chose to run this race for a few reasons: it was logistically easy and a fast, flat course.

However, I had my concerns going in after seeing complaints about inadequate water stations from the year before and knowing that a large portion of the race is run on an expressway that was open to traffic during the race.

As it turns out, my concerns were warranted. The number of water stations were probably adequate for the shorter distance races also occurring, but there were inadequate stations for the marathon, especially for a hot day. Also, dixie cup sized cups were used and clearly very few volunteers at the water stations were given instructions on how to man a water station. The highway out and back portion proved to be mentally challenging as well as unsafe.

My conclusion about this race is that there was a disconnect between the needs of the runners vs putting on an event. For example, there were many sponsors to this race, including a national sporting goods chain putting their name on this race and yet the food available to runners at the finish was pitiful and nobody was really helping exhausted runners finishing the race on a hot day. Despite this, there was some sort of food tent for VIPs only at the post race area. Also, there was free beer from a very good, nearby brewery and a live band playing. Don't get me wrong, that was great, but not exactly what someone needs just finishing a marathon. I actually ended up buying a sandwich from a food truck that was there so I could get something decent to eat.

The fact that the number of participants declined from year 2 to year 3 of this race should tell you something. In my opinion, without a course change to improve runner safety, the marathon portion of this running event should be discontinued.

Montreal marathon was cancelled on the Thursday prior to the race due to high temperatures. I did Binghampton since it was close to Ottawa and looked like a well organized race. It is only 3 years old but it treats runners well. If you belong to a running club you get a 30% discount on entry fees which are already low. I was able to get a hotel room for $80 US a few km from the race start and the RD worked hard to accommodate the high temps. More water stations, freezes, ice and great volunteers. The pasta dinner was $10 and sponsored by Olive Garden and had a great spread. Good massage after the race and nice medal, shirt and glass. Worth going your way out of for.

Nice race. Enjoyed the first and last five miles on the coal house trail. The rest was up and back on a fairly busy road. Wished the race went through Vestal/Binghampton a little more. The organizers were very nice. I hope this race grows over the years.
