"Unimaginative course and poor value" (about: 2021)

| 1 Independence Series - DE
COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 1 The event was more of a farce than a race. You run a <1 mile course out-and-back 16 times, and to keep track of laps you have to stop and pick up rubber bands (no timing chips). There were no awards for speed and almost all participants were walkers. You had to bring your own bottle (no open containers allowed) but only the volunteers were allowed to (slowly) fill them up. In 2021--a COVID year--participants didn't have to wear masks while running or walking, but for some reason, it was mandatory to wear one during the 20-30 seconds you waited for a volunteer to refill your bottle, regardless of your vaccination status. If the marathon cost $35 like other no-frills marathons do, all this would be fine. But it cost $100-$150 (depending on when you signed up; I paid $130 + online registration fees), making it an extremely poor value. You might as well just drive over to a park with your car stocked with a few bottles of Gatorade, and then run laps passing by your car multiple times on your own, timing with Strava. There is almost no difference. You wouldn't get a shirt and a medal... but you would also likely end up with a faster time not having to weave around so many walkers, wait for bottle refills, or stop to pick up rubber bands. |
