"Super-organized marathon" (about: 2019)

I ran the Kyoto marathon 2019 and it was super good experience. The race course in itself is a tad bit boring as it mostly goes outside of downtown Kyoto, but the roads are broad and there was no crowding despite a large number of runners. Running through Kyoto Botanical Garden after 27 km is a great experience though. Although the course is pretty flat, there are plenty of long, gradual uphills followed by downhills.

The fans along the course we're amazing, really good crowd support, also plenty of volunteers throughout the course, clear markings and good aid stations.

The Japanese are second to none when is comes to organizing a marathon. Everything from information before the race, expo, service throughout the race to the finish was superb.

If you want to try and run marathon in Japan and haven't been lucky to get in to Tokyo, Kyoto marathon is a really good alternative.

"Super Flat Course" (about: 2017)

If you thought Chicago was flat, you need to run Tokyo. The course was a trial run for the 2020 Olympics & it is super flat & fast. However, the long plane ride (13.5 hours from DFW) can be a problem for overseas runners. While I felt good through the half, by 30k my legs were dead.

The route goes through many of the different neighborhoods of the city, by numerous Shinto & Buddhist shrines, past taiko drummers & the Tokyo Tower, through the Ginza & finishes in front of the Imperial Palace. No Gatorade but they have Pocari Sweat (faint watermelon taste) - quite good! Volunteers seemingly every 100m or so picking up trash, tons of portapotties. There was a great rock band at the start but that was it for music except for drummers.

My only complaint is that the crowds, while large, were very quiet, almost like they were watching a golf tournament. But I have never been made to feel so much like a rock star. At dinner before the race, a waitress looked at my jacket from another race & exclaimed 'Marathon!' & bowed. As I left, she rushed over a gave me a banana, 'For you run' she gushed. Totally sweet. Picking up my race packet volunteers cheered, applauded & bowed. All in all one of the most organized as well as enjoyable races I have ever run.
