"Great race!" (about: 2019)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Tomoka Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Ran this race in order to cross Florida off my list on my 50-state quest. I would highly recommend it to others on the same path as me, so long as you bear in mind that flights to Florida during Spring Break can be quite expensive.

Pros:
* I was skeptical about the 6 am, pre-dawn marathon start, but it turned out to be great. The streets were well lit, and I see this helping with the heat during years hotter than 2019.
* I think I got to mile 18 before I had to apply sun screen. I only applied as a precaution as I have very fair skin. The Florida sun is not an issue in this race (depending on what time you finish, I suppose). Tons of shade.
* Race day packet pick-up and bag drop-off are becoming rarer. This race had both.
* Nice medal and t-shirt.
* Great course. Pretty scenery in the state park. Mostly flat with few turns.
* Had no problem with parking.

Cons:
* Ugh. Don't throw a huge hill in during mile 26. Run the course backwards if you have to.
* Runners are sharing the roads with cars without any cones or other barriers. Not a huge concern, but a small hazard nonetheless.

Note: The commenter below was complaining about not receiving a medal. Just want to be clear that full marathon finishers received a rather nice medal. I'm not sure why anyone thinks he deserves a medal for running a 5K.

I think along with half and full marathoners, the 5k runners also deserve medals. The run over the bridge is quite the challenge whether you run, or walk. Just seems unfair to leave the 5k runners out of a deserving medal.

Wonderful event from start to finish. Packet pick-up was super low-key and very fast. I rode the shuttle from the host hotel to/from the race. Finished about 20 minutes faster than I was trained for - very fast course. Have received compliments on the great fit of the ladies' shirt when I wear it. Great beer at the end, and you get a ticket for a free beer at the sponsor brewery after. I'd come down to Florida for spring training baseball and I decided to throw a marathon in; this is the one that happened to be going on when I'd be there, and I am grateful it was such a great event! Definitely worth traveling for!

I don't know what else I would want from a marathon. The course was very flat (literally only 2 hills) and well-supported. They had us start at 6 AM to avoid the heat which I thought was very nice. BEAUTIFUL scenery throughout. I got an unexpected PR in this race so I think it would be a good course for a BQ.

I've run 4 marathons in Florida (87 in total) and I wish I had chosen this years ago when I started my 50 state journey. I'd really recommend this for 50-staters but all marathoners, really. Great time of year to run in Florida. Absolutely beautiful course, the kind you wish you could have for all your long runs. Wonderful race management. I booked my hotel too late and stayed in Daytona Beach but there were many choices available and it was an easy drive to start/finish area. I'd do this one again for a late March escape to Florida. Definitely consider this for your Florida marathon - great size, course, and attention to all the details!

I've run Tomoka Marathon all 5 years. It is one of the most beautiful courses you will find. You won't find many spectators if that's what you need. It's flat without too many turns. It's a great BQ course. There is plenty of shade so even if it's a warm year it isn't as bad as other Florida races.

"Great Spring Florida Marathon" (about: 2018)

If you are looking for a relaxed race without a lot of spectators, this is it. There were just over 300 people for this race, you always saw runners throughout the marathon. Kimberly, you rocked as our four hour pace group leader, very consistent mile pacing throughout the race. The music you played on your phone helped the group out, well done. The Best Western on the beach made the stay real chill and relaxed. Minor negative was going off route between mile 13-14 which was less than a 1/4 mile before going back on the main road. Was this little sidebar necessary since the course was over 26.4 mi. Other than that I will definitely be back to do this race again, well done.

If you need a lot of fanfare throughout your race, this might not be for you. This is a scenic, natural course, with a small loop (a few miles) through the Tomoka State Park, which is crushed shell. The large trees provide a lot of shade, and as a 5 year participant, we have seen cold days-hot days, but that's FL for you. They do provide beautiful medals and shirts, nice swag for alumni, and hot, fresh pizza and craft beer at the finish.

"Most beautiful course in Florida" (about: 2016)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Tomoka Marathon

I have to say that of the 8 marathons that I have run, this one is by far my favorite. They said the course beautiful and they were not kidding! It started in the winter home of John D. Rockefeller, the Casements, ran through river vistas, old growth oak trees, dappled with sunlight. The start was pre-dawn and was made very exciting by the race announcer and music. Overall, there was a lot of attention to details, and the race had a welcoming home town feel. Excellent communication all the way around and very friendly and happy staff and race volunteers.

Beautiful and scenic course. The overpass bridge after mile 25 is not cool. Aid stations had adequate water, but Gatorade was some powdered concoction that tasted bad. No spectators, but a beautiful run in the woods. For the size, a good race
