"Beautiful course, significant heat." (about: 2019)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Da Nang International Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

This race offered a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K. I ran the half, but since the full was two loops of the half course, I saw the whole course. The 5K is an untimed fun run.

Positives. The course is really pretty. Runners experience both beach and river views, and cross two of Da Nang's iconic bridges. One of these bridges is moderately challenging, the other is tough. There is a third bridge that is little more than a speed bump. There is plenty of water and porta-potties on the course. Runners in the full and half get two t-shirts: a race shirt and a finisher's shirt with your distance on the back. There is an exclusive recovery area for full and half runners with food, water, electrolyte drinks, massage, and local craft beer. Nice finisher medal. Packet pickup is located at the race site, which simplifies logistics.

Negatives. Traffic control at the intersections and roundabouts is not good. Runners are dodging busses and scooters. The course is not closed to traffic, which is a problem at times. A running lane is blocked off by cones, but this is easily ignored by aggressive drivers. This is a problem and safety issue the organizers need to address. A more minor issue was that full and half runners were forced to weave around 10K walkers the last 3K of the course. The 10K route needs to be rethought.

Other observations. Heat is a major issue. The race starts an hour before sunrise, which helps a bit. But do not expect to PR. Only run the full if you are supremely confident in your ability to tolerate extreme heat and humidity. 4 hour plus marathon runners will be finishing in assaultive heat and rain forest humidity. There are no age group awards. The travel agency associated with the race is quite good. English is spoken reasonably well in the area near the race and hotels. There is no reason to let language concerns keep you away if you are interested.

Numbers. Full: 921. Half: 2237. 10K: 1732. 5k: ??

"Enjoyable run with cheer support & drinks stations" (about: 2016)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Da Nang International Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

The Danang International Marathon was held on Saturday 060816 at 4.20am.

The race pack collection, start & finish points were at Bien Dong Park. The organisation of the run was good & there was no obstruction or bottle necks along the whole route because it was a boutique run & participants were few <2000. There was a drink point every 2km with bottled water, electrolyte drinks & bananas in alternate drinks stations. There was a small cheer group every 3km, & a party at the start & finish area.

The route of the marathon brought runners to pass by or cross several beautiful bridges along Danang's Han Pu River. We ran over the magnificent, cable-stayed Tran Thi Ly Bridge which had the shape of a sail. We then ran into the heart of Danang, near the Han Market and the Dragon Bridge. We were able to see sunrise along most of these areas and many people exercising along the esplanade facing the bridges and the Han River. After seeing sunrise at the Cau Song Han Bridge, runners ran up the Thuan Phuoc Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Vietnam. This brought us to the opposite bank of the Han River & thereafter, along the shoreline & beachfront of Danang, and back to Bien Dong Park.

Full marathon runners did a second similar route. Beware that slow,>5hrs FM runners will face scorching heat along the course. Organisers shouted out our bib numbers & names as we crossed the finish line & helped us wear our medals. Runners were then guided to collect their finisher t shirts and to the refreshments & massage areas. There were also a 10km & a 5km wheelchair/disabled runners' category later the same morning.

This is an enjoyable run that has no IAAF ratings but with an icing on the cake in the form of a quick sojourn after the marathon to UNESCO's Hoi An, 28km south of Danang.

"Just a run and not much else" (about: 2015)

THE GOOD: nice course, beautiful medal, the organizers took a lot of care to close off the roads and protect the runners from traffic (at least for the half-marathon distance). A LOT of water stations! The first one starts at 2.5 km!

THE BAD: about that course - a full marathon is basically the second loop on the same course, sans all the protection and with all that traffic going on. Did I mention that the race starts at 4 in the morning? Yeah, because when you are on the second loop, you run along with all those crazy scooters.

THE UGLY:
* the expo was pathetic. Nothing sports related - just some random stalls, that sold sushi (!), yakitori and liquors by bottles.

* the results were published on the marathon's website as two PDF files - one sorted by bib number and the other by the race time. That's it. No official mirror with the chip company, no ratings, nothing. Good luck getting this on Athlinks.

* no finisher pix? Or running pictures, even for money? Just 20 or so pics, that the organizers have put on their Facebook page. I've seen children's birthdays with more afterthought than this.

All in all the run was nice, but the organization around it was really amateurish. There were no elite runners, of course. The post race party looked sad from the window of my taxi and boy was I glad I haven't stayed for it.

"A Running Adventure" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Da Nang International Marathon

The Danang Marathon was not a race, it was a wonderful adventure. Sure it was hot. That should be no suprise to anyone signing up. Just to be part of this inaugural race in Viet Nam made the heat bearable. As one who has run all of the world's six major marathons, none of them captured my heart and mind the way that Danang did. To the people of Viet Nam and the race organizers I send you my sincere thanks.
From a Vietnam veteran.

"This race was a horror due to high temperatures." (about: 2013)

This race was relatively flat. It should never have been organized to run in September. The heat and humidity were unbearable. I must thank the race director for still being alive. I am a slow and older runner. When I finished the first half, I was totally alone. The race director realized that I was determined to finish this race no matter what. He stayed with me the whole second half and directed traffic for me. I would have been killed by the thousands of mopeds. There was no traffic control for the second half, and if it were not for Khim I would not be around to write this review. The heat was around 97 and with the humidity the heat humidity factor was about 110. In the United States, this race wouldbnot have occurred.
