When I decided to run the Mauritius Marathon I made a big error by booking the Hotel first instead of the Marathon. Because I was unable to book the Marathon until got a letter from my General Practioner (Doctor) which states that I was fit and well to run the Marathon, that was the requirement to run this year Mauritus Marathon.

I was not happy about it. I emailed the race organisers and told them about Marathons I recently ran but they insisted that I needed a letter from the GP. Which I managed to do.

The Marathon race started 06.30am at St Fellix park and also finished at St. Felix park. The cut off time is 6 hours. There were shuttle buses from the main hotel which took runners to the race from 05.30am There were a couple of toilets on St. Felix Beach but it did not open until 10 mins before the race started. It rained heavily most of the time during the race.

There were water stations every 5k with large plastic cups and some water stations had water and others had Coke Cola, bananas and bowl of mixture of salt and sugar.

The Marshals were mostly Policemen on foot. The views/and scenery were quite breathtaking.
The spectators were mostly just relatives and friends who supported us runners.

All finishers got a Wooden Medal.

The running shirts/vest we got with our race bag were a smaller than actual size. I did inform the organisers that it was too small for large shirt. They said they could not change it but then I witnessed a runner complained about her small shirt and they change her running shirt.

Asics and Lux are two of main massive sponsors who need to be more heavily involved to make Mauritus Marathon one of best Topical Marahon in the World.

Recommended Hotel to stay is highly rated Tamassi Hotel.

"Small Race in Beautiful Setting" (about: 2017)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Mauritius Marathon

This, the Africa leg of my 7 Continents march, is a tough race to review. On one hand, the entire race is along the Indian Ocean, with palm trees and lapping waves along the way. Magnificent setting. There was water (cupped, from bottles) and Coca Cola at frequent enough stations along the way (with bananas at most stops too). Rolling hills, though nothing too severe. Not a fast course in my view, mostly because of the two turnaround points and because the roads remain open to cars/trucks/busses the whole race.

The race is tiny, with only about 100 marathoners. This may be a cause of some of the 'limitations' but it could also be an asset.
1. Could have had bib pickup on race day. Instead, for those not staying at the main hotel, it required successive day trips over there (which is a challenge as the road system in Mauritius isn't the best).
2. Tech shirt was nice, but not overwhelming. No other give-aways, which was a bit surprising for such a boutique-type race. In other similar races, they've given a light jacket, hat, or other trinket to thank the runners for making the out-of-the-way destination their choice.
3. They don't close the road to traffic. A bit terrifying through some parts as the local drivers drive pretty aggressively.
4. Medal was a wooden disk with Mauritian flag colored ribbon. Came across a bit cheap to me. Could have been Dodo shaped at least or had better printing on it? Maybe I'm whining, but it could have been nicer with limited additional expense.
5. Post-race food was pretty awful. Banana and coconut water were good. Bun with some kind of shredded cheese was inedible.
6. There's really no spectators along the way. Maybe 10 people total (family of runners?)
7. No toilets anywhere (start, finish, along the route). I did find a public one around mile 10, which (despite no TP) felt like god himself put it there for me.
8. Very little pre-race communication (website, email...nothing really). Had a panic attack before setting out on the trip that my registration hadn't actually gone through!

I've run small marathons that were just more polished than this one. I still had a great time, but it wasn't the best I've experienced.
