"Very lame race organizers!" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Rio Grande Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 3

Okay... the 2007 results have not yet been posted... after 11 months. I've emailed the race organization twice to inquire about the results posting, but I've never received an answer. The course was okay, but an earlier start would be better, since it go a tad warm near the end of my sub-four-hour marathon. The food was pretty skimpy. There are just too many other marathons to run, so I won't run this one again.

"Poor Organization" (about: 2007)

Small marathons typically bring out the highest quality of race organization. Hands down, this is the biggest exception to that rule. It's a shame because this had the potential to be a very nice run.

Still waiting on those results, now over 4 months late. I sure hope no one was planning on using this as their BMQ!

"Great course!!!" (about: 2007)

But the race organizers will take forever to post the results... if they ever do!!! The 2007 results are still not posted. What's up with that?

"A great small marathon" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Rio Grande Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This is a great marathon to run! It's small (about 100 full marathoners), so don't expect a lot of amenities, big crowds, bands playing, or anything like that. It's a flat out-and-back course, that starts on roads, spends a few miles on a paved path along the Rio Grande, and returns to a back road to the turn-around. Scenic, and well supported with fluids. Basic t-shirt and medal. Modest food at the end. Lots of category awards. Friendly support staff. It can get a bit warm if you are a 4-hour-plus runner. But the views are worth it. I'd run it again in a minute! One of my favorites.

"A good way to start" (about: 2007)

1 previous marathon | 1 Rio Grande Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

It was my first half marathon and I appreciated the friendliness of the organizers, the family-run size of the event and how everything went smoothly. Good water station planning (every mile) and a few very patient and supportive young kids handing out paper cups for a day. I would have avoided the dirt road in the middle miles. Overall, a very good start; I am ready for a bigger one now.

"Very friendly, small, hometown race. Loved it." (about: 2006)

6-10 previous marathons

This is the first 1/2 marathon that I've run that provided dinner, medal, t-shirt, Kachina Doll, and lunch at the end!!!! This is my 10th 1/2 marathon. My husband and I drove from AZ, and it was well worth
it. We met friendly people. The whole experience was very pleasant. "Hi" to the couple from Iowa, and I wonder if the wife won in her age category....

"Wonderful small race" (about: 2006)

3 previous marathons | 1 Rio Grande Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

This was a wonderful small race. The out-and-back course was flat through country roads and through a river bed trial. I loved the finish with a victory lap in the stadium. Water and Gatorade were provided every other mile, but no gels were given. I was lucky to have brought my own.

The only major problem was that some of the vehicles sharing the road did not give the runners much room. I mean they did not move enough to the left of the road to let two runners run side by side. I had to get off the road at times. A runner ahead of me had a close call with a van's mirror. I hope the race gets bigger so that the organizers can afford to pay for more traffic control.

Thanks to the organizers and all the friendly volunteers.

"Runs smoothly" (about: 2006)

6-10 previous marathons | 4-5 Rio Grande Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

A great group of volunteers put on this marathon. Nice people manage it and run in it. If you like a smaller race, this is it - without a crowd at the start. The weather was great: 40F at race time, 60F at the finish, and sunny.

"Hot" (about: 2004)

1 previous marathon | 1 Rio Grande Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

A well-aided race. Volunteers every mile. This was a small race, so it had a lonely finish. The last three miles are kind of brutal along the side of a road in the heat. Great volunteers!

"There were no people to tell us where to line up." (about: 2006)

3 previous marathons | 1 Rio Grande Marathon

There needs to be water at the end of the marathon - the cooler of water was EMPTY when my friend finished. Water bottles would have been nice. The people with water and Gatorade along the course were very nice and supportive. The start in the parking lot with speed bumps could have been avoided.
