The English version of the (to begin with somewhat confusing) internet site has never worked well, but did not work at all this year. Few foreigners took part, probably because they - like me - failed to find out the the number of participants was limited this year, meaning the usual day-before registration was impossible. I was lucky enough to be able to step in for one who had to withdraw.

A great event, with a perfect course (you run along the beach for almost 10 K). Also, there was great entertainment after the race. i will be back next year.

I ran only 21K on July 19th, 2009. The atmosphere was great, and the organization too. I enjoyed the half-marathon. It was a very good experience.

As a US resident, there was a bit of a challenge to get registered initially, and some difficulty at the Bangkok packet pickup, but the staff/volunteers were great and got everything resolved. There were NO port-a-potties anywhere along the route, which was a major problem. But, the aid stations were well stocked and even for slower runners, filled with plenty of ice/water. And the sponges were such a welcome treat! The pre-post party events were nice, and there was a very affordable entry fee with plenty of value.

I had a great time in the Pattaya Marathon, even though there was a small entry crowd in the full marathon. It would've helped knowing the course a little bit better prior to running it, as the course from around 18K to 29K had rolling interstate slopes. Also on a wish list would be for more spread out water tables to prevent piling up (but due to the small pack size, it wasn't usually a problem!).

Really, those are minor comments; the course is a good and straightforward one for a middle-of-summer marathon. It's a great time, topped off by the welcome ocean breeze on the way in. Overall, a great one!

"race suggestions" (about: 2009)

I would like to thank the organizers for another well put together Pattaya Marathon. I've raced many races (and won quite a few too) in Thailand and in Europe. I would like to make a few suggestions to better this great event. I would firstly like to recommend a placement for the quicker athletes, which could allow them to start close to the front of the race. It's normal in Europe to have elite athletes run at the front. I, for one, started some 20 rows back today, which was frustrating. I am a 30-minute 10K runner, and I failed to compete properly today as there was no room to run. Secondly, would it be possible to channel athletes on theSukhumvit that are running the 10K - that is, on the turn-around? I was almost colliding with individuals running the opposite way.

I don't want to sound bitter about the run today, as it was excellent. I am only trying to help make it better.

I ran Pattaya in 2002 and finished 4th. I was not in good condition but I was able to take home US$900 anyway.
The organization needs improvement, but this is Thailand, so just smile and enjoy being in Thailand! Due to the hot weather, humidity and hills, you will not run your best time, more like your best time plus 15-20 minutes, but you will have fun. Some 'Ladies of the evening' saved my race in 2002 with an 'UNOFFICIAL' aid station at about 36km with a glass of sugary red koolaid (cordial). One thing to keep in mind is that there is no aid-station from 32 to 38km. Maybe this has changed. If you are a good runner you can pay for the trip with prize money. Enjoy. Jason Mayeroff

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Pattaya Queen's Cup Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

Have now run 4 marathons in Asia but my first in Thailand. Started on the Pattaya Beach front at 4am under warm conditions with all the fanfare from the large crowd, which included those making their way home from the bars. Headed out to the very wide main highway, one side for the runners and the traffic used the other. Obviously between 4-6am supporters were a little thin and traffic was minimal. Traffic police and volunteers did an excellent job ensuring crossing traffic gave way to the runners and not the other way around. Where there were no lights on the highway, lights were erected, which was great for safety. Approx. at the 31km mark we turned off the highway and headed towards Jomtien Beach. This 2.5km stretch was shared with the traffic which was minimal and courteous. Turned right onto Jomtien Beach Road where for next 5km a wide portion of the road was coned off for the runners, and by the time I got there (at 8:15am), traffic was quickly buiding up. Passengers in the Baht buses (taxis) and of all nationalities were jeering at the runners, but this was done in good taste, and once again, traffic was courteous. Last 2.5km runners had Walking St. and Pattaya Beach Road to themselves.

With the exception of one hill, the course was generally flat. 4am is an excellent start time, especially for 4-hour plus runners.

Plenty of very cold water and sponge stations at 3-4km intervals, but only one carb. station at the 29km mark.
Witnessed many runners from 20km mark onwards putting their cups and sponges into the rubbish bags where provided. Courtesy must be only a Thai thing.

In future races I would like to see 3 carb stations, and I'd like the pattaya-marathon.com site to show more details about the race (similar to that of the Thai Temple Run).

Overall I enjoyed the run. Temperatures were humid but not uncomfortable, and would like to return if time and MONEY permit.

"Different" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 1  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

After running a number of races in Thailand the heat is not a new problem. However, the heat along the course is close to unbearable. The course starts along Pattaya Beach and soons disappears away from the tourist areas and onto the highway. It's hot, dry and fumes from cars passing make the course unpleasant. There is little to see on the majority of the course but back into town you get to see Pattaya nightlife crawling back home. Interesting... The organization is excellent, as is spectator (if limited to the city) support. I would suggest a prettier course if you wanted to race in Thailand, such as the Thailand Temple Run.
