David Cheromei set his goals on running the 8K in Richmond, VA and was told he could not get in..but the marathon had a few spots left. He toed the line and nearly won the whole thing.

Cheromei, a Lynchburger, almost wins his first marathon in Richmond by not being an elite.

A lean at the tape and 1/10th of a second separated Awol from Cheromei in the men's Richmond Marathon. The leaders crossed nearly together in 2 hours, 20 minutes and 20 seconds to usher in well over 5000 record setting participants in the Richmond Marathon.
