Little-known fact about the Mad City Marathon: Sunday's race marked the 30th anniversary of marathoning in Madison.Few remember that the first incarnation of the on-again, off-again race - known until recently as the Madison Marathon - took place in 1974, when 59 runners finished at Vilas Park after snaking their way 26.2 miles through the UW Arboretum and the city's Southwest Side.

Mad City Marathon hits its stride

Internationally acclaimed mezzo soprano Kitt Reuter-Foss will 
perform the National Anthem sending off 4,000 runners from 41 states, and 
seven countries, including Thailand, Japan, Italy, United Kingdom, Uruguay, 
Canada and Germany on Sunday, May 30, for the 2004 Mad City Marathon and 
its related races.
