The organization: you'll never have to question anything. It's all laid out for you in advance and there are volunteers all over to get you where you need to be. This is flawless execution of a marathon in my opinion. I can't say enough good things about how well the course is ran. WOW.

The course: come out of the gate flying and you may just find a PR. The first 7 miles are guaranteed to give you good time. Mile 8-20 is where the real race begins and you flatten out on the course. That's where you'll actually have to start running. 20-26 are always hard but save some energy for the last 5k because those hills will destroy you and you'll lose all the time you banked in the start. What's a race without a little fight? Right? Still a great course for your best time.

Spectators: you'll have a good flow of people yelling followed by some quiet focused miles. I like the balance. Nothing is better than running a race in the peace of fall and then hitting a roaring fan base. If you want it to be electric 24/7 this isn't your race.

"Amazing, hilly race" (about: 2023)

First time running this marathon and only my 2nd marathon. This was a fantastic event, from the organization to amazing community support. The number of water and Gatorade stations, port-a-potties and all of the cheerleaders and house parties along the route made this race so much fun! I just need to find a place to hill train - it's difficult when you live in an area called Big Flats!

A very well organized race - point-to-point so there's a 45 minute shuttle ride from parking at the end to the start, but it was super easy and convenient. Being able to hang out inside the high school at the start line was a big plus especially since it was windy and chilly in 2023. The race is super well organized, the pre-race communications are above and beyond top notch informative and hilarious. The course is a net downhill with a few steep sections (don't worry they found uphills for the last 3 miles), that winds through a bunch of little towns from Forest City to Scranton - fortunately we had cloud cover as I imagine this race can get pretty toasty in full sun for most of the miles. With a small field of about 1000 runners, and good but sporadic spectators, it's a pretty quiet and laid back experience overall so if that's your kind of thing (like it is mine, I'm over giant 30,000+ people races) I recommend checking this one out!

I have run the Steamtown Marathon 6 times, with this year (2023) being my final. I do not say 'final' because Steamtown Marathon is the reason. I say final because I have decided, after 33 marathons, to end the odyssey. If it seems like a message that I would decide to quit marathoning with Steamtown, it should. I have loved this race since I first heard about it. I could think of no better event to enjoy my last hurrah than this one. The course, while brutal on your quads, is beautiful, particularly the rail trail portions, which are breathtaking. The organization is fantastic, starting with the entertaining e-mails sent by Jim Cummins, and continuing with the handy pre-race facilities at Forest City, and everything in between. The post-race festivities are first-rate, starting and ending, for me, with the hot perogies. And of course, the spectators are, well, spectacular! For such a relatively small race, it is truly amazing to see so many people, out and cheering for random running strangers. If I planned to continue doing marathons, and I only did one per year, this would be it. Highly and unreservedly recommended.

The group that organizes and manages this race have thought of everything. Everyone I heard talking about it was in agreement that it was the most organized, thoughtful, and creative marathon experience they had ever been involved in. The support from volunteers and the local communities is overwhelming. This is a world class experience with a small town feel.

A beautiful course, spectacular autumn scenery. The greater Scranton area is so welcoming to the runners - and the organization of the race is flawless!

My 1st marathon and I was very impressed with how well it was organized and how much support there was throughout the race. The spectators were all wonderful shouting my name which gave me some much needed emotional boosts. I would do it again!

The downhill course was well organized and the e-mails from the assistant race director leading up to the marathon were always a joy. My first marathon experience will be hard to beat.

"Fantastic Marathon" (about: 2023)

Steamtown Marathon is very organized. The race committee does any amazing job communicating with all entrants from the minute you sign up until a month or two post race. I promise you will love the emails. The course is very good for a Boston qualifier or a first marathon or anything in between. This race also is a smaller race if that is better for you. Its a point to point race. It starts at Forest City High school. This gives you time to warm up inside the school before the start. A huge plus compared to bigger fall races. The volunteers are exceptional at every level. A free post race massage is offered too. Thats another small town race benefit. Many people run this more than once. That says enough about this race alone.
