 "Ignore the topo map" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Forget the topo map and be prepared for the hills. The up-hill section between 5-8 miles is hard but not as hard as the down-hill between 10 and 13 miles. Your legs take a real pounding. The organization is great and the crowd is enthusiastic. The PIG is an exceptional medium-sized marathon that the entire city embraces. It was a lot of fun. | |

 "Absolutely A Top Notch Spring Marathon" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I ran this marathon for the first time because the Washington D.C. race was cancelled, and I am glad I did it. This is a fantastic race. The volunteers are super and they make you feel welcome. It is well organized, there are lots of encouraging spectators, plenty of support, and the course is not that difficult. The hills are overrated and not as steep as I expected. You can run a personal record here and many do. The Cliff Shot Pacing Team was very helpful. The medal is worth all of the hard work and training you are going to put into getting ready. Also we got two t-shirts, a poster, and a nicely monogrammed flying pig gym bag (which was great). Cincinnati goes all out for this race. Even if there is a 2004 race in Washington DC next spring I won't be there because I'm running the Flying Pig. | |

"A top-quality marathon" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I have now run all 5 of the Pigs, and am more impressed with the marathon every year. This year's course modifications were excellent, giving us runners a nice sampling of several different neighborhoods and cutting back on the industrial Eastern Avenue section. It was very nicely varied. There seemed to be more cheering supporters out there, and even more pig-themed amusements and costumes. Loved the live pig on the leash along the way, thanks to whoever brought him/her! This was my 32nd marathon/ultra, my husband's third, and my daughter's first. I was so proud to share this with them, and to show our daughter how a marathon SHOULD be organized. Any future marathons that she runs will have a very hard time matching this one for organization, quality, volunteers and just plain fun. I also like the idea that there is no prize money. This is a race that is intended for the joy of the sport, not for making money from it. While I understand that the elites make a living from running, they have plenty of other opportunities to do that in other cities. Let 'common' runners enjoy the glory of winning or placing in this one. Well done, hometown Cincinnati! | |

"A great place for a first marathon!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon and it was awesome! The organizers and spectators were awesome! Especially the People dressed as pigs and the great medal awarded to the finishers. The only part I wished were different were miles 18- 22 were in a dreary industrial district with no spectators. But miles 5-12 were incredible through the nicest neighborhoods in Cincinnati with hundreds of spectators cheering you on! I will do this one again next year! | |

 "Good, not Great" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 The new course was fun. If there was a negative, it was backtracking parts of the course. I expected a little larger crowds (Eastern Ave and Covington, KY were extremly small, very nice crowds at the beginning, Eden Park, Hyde Park, Central Parkway and Newport, KY). The volunteers (grunts) were extremly nice at all of the water stops. Can't say enough about them. Some volunteers at the finish line could be little more patient with runners (some were almost rude). I would do it again and wouldn't discourage anyone from coming to Cincinnati, OH to run the Flying Pig. | |

"Worth the trip!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 The Flying Pig is simply one of the best all-around marathons in which I have ever taken part. While the Flying Pig is certainly not a flat course, the hills are in no way insurmountable... In fact, if you've trained on hills, the ups and downs might be somewhat of a relief. The excellent weather, perfect organization, pretty course, reasonable crowd size (less than 5,000 participants in the full marathon - so great after the absolute traffic jams in Chicago...) friendly volunteers, enthusiastic (if not numerous) spectators and kind locals all combined to make a banner day. Though Cincinatti doesn't seem like the most exciting place in the world to spend a weekend, I will say that there are many activities to be found and the world-class marathon makes it well worth the trip. I don't know if I would ever run the race again... I'm simply reluctant to try to re-do such a perfect day. I HIGHLY recommend this race. | |

"Just enough ups and downs." (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my 119th marathon and I must say that this is very close to the top of my list as my favorite. The organization/support was terrific. Clocks/aid staions every mile, music, great scenery, and PERFECT weather. I thought that the hill's ups and downs were the perfect mix to keep your legs honest. I would highly recommend this race to anyone looking for an enjoyable, fun, fast race. | |

"What a great race!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I'm not sure they have many races 'neater' than this one. All kinds of goodies in the goodie bag, great finisher medal --- just a classy event! The finish was great with the lengthy chute before the finish line. This year's weather couldn't have been better and the course is really set up nicely. As someone else has noted, the hills are all in the right places and there is nothing too brutal or mean-spirited on the whole course. Great job Cincinnati! |
