"Wrightsville Beach: A WINNER!" (about: 2015)

I am glad I picked Wrightsville Beach to knock NC off the list of my 50 state goal. A great course, great expo, and great supporters. The water views and gated community course was awesome and the NCAA Basketball tie-in was fantastic. A must for locals thinking about running or for 50 staters who have not yet hit NC.

"Fun marathon with a flat and fast course." (about: 2015)

I loved the Wrightsville Beach Marathon! The two-loop course is very flat except for a few gentle rollers in the Landfall neighborhood (which is beautiful, BTW). The aid stations were plentiful and well-stocked, and each had multiple port-o-johns. The post-race was great, with a live band, free NC craft beer, and a large food tent. The age group awards were custom-printed growlers, that you could get filled at a nearby beer store - very unique! I also thought Tom Clifford, and his crew, did an outstanding job organizing this event... I'll definitely be back!

"loved it" (about: 2015)

Loved this race. So well organized. The water stops were fun with the college themes. Spectators were great along the course.
I was nervous about the double loop - hadn't ever done that before, but actually really liked it. The loops were slightly different at the end and you knew what you were in for. There were some easy rolling hills in the neighborhood, but nothing crazy at all. The finish line activity - band, food, large party tent - all very nice. Inside the tent were tables and food for runners-nice touch. I would recommend this marathon - it is a faster course. I got a BQ - so needless to say - I'm happy!

"Amazing Race!" (about: 2015)

This was my 23rd full marathon/14th state and I really enjoyed the entire weekend experience. The race director and team provided a great expo, course set-up and awesome post race party.

Job well done to all of the staff and volunteers.

I'll be back and will bring friends.

"Very Good Event" (about: 2014)

I would like to say a few things about Wrightsville Beach Marathon. First, I was pleasantly surprised by the variation in the course. I have run 2 other beach location marathons I will never go back to them. I was afraid this race would be more of the same & I was wrong. Great course, just enough variation to not get bored. 2nd, the number of aid stations was really outstanding. My wife and I had run a half-marathon in February as a tune-up. Great half-marathon but it was a warm day & their lack of aid stations became a real issue for many runners Wrightsville had no such issue and that was a plus. 3rd the setup from hotels, to bus, to packet pick-up, & finish was excellent&our hotel was within walking or warm-up jog of all we needed to do. We have both told everyone how well organized your marathon is & that it should be a must on their calendar.

"Best out of the 'Big 3'" (about: 2014)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Wilmington Marathon

Hands down the best race course out of the 'Big 3' races in the south east (Charleston, Myrtle Beach & Wrightsville Beach). I've run all 3 in the last 2 months and Wrighsville Beach by far the best course. No camber issues like Myrtle Beach, No rail roads crossing and industrial parks to run thru like Charleston! Wrightsville course truly flat and no hills at all. Great net decent finish for the last 1.5 miles. After party first rate! Great craft beers (Natty Greene's & Sam Adams) a whole separate area just for runners to eat after wards with tables! Will be doing this race next year again!

"Great race, great organization, great spectators." (about: 2013)

Thoroughly enjoyed the race. Looking back at comments from previous years, it looks like the organizers took the negative comments under consideration and did everything they could to address them. This year it was a two-loop course, which I knew before arriving because it was posted clearly on the website. The area you run through twice is absolutely beautiful! Aid stations were well stocked and frequent. Volunteers were great, helpful and enthusiastic! Spectators were sparse in places, but I expected that because of the smallish nature of the town and race.

It's not a race I'll travel 1000 miles for every year, but I fully expect to be back to run this race from time to time in the future.

"Beautiful race but dangerous spectators" (about: 2012)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Wilmington Marathon

Fast course, plentiful supplies and superb volunteers, beautiful city and entertainment. but spectators were outrageous, crossing in front of runners without any respect, as unsafe as possible. If the safety improves I will be back again next year !

"Best race I have done - responding to previous" (about: 2012)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Wilmington Marathon

I just want to say that this race was probably one of the best I have ever done. I have gone to Myrtle Beach, Boston and Chicago and yes those races are big, but there was a lot of attention to detail here. I am also defending the comment below about the last bus. There was a life threatening accident on the bus route which is why it was late. Nobody knew that bus was late. I was on it so I know....If you were at the bus station when the event organizers posted, you would have easily made it. Those of us who got there late, that is our fault, not the races. T-shirts - great material, they even had a pony tale on the girls shirt. Post race party - very big, free beer from Mother Earth, Blowing Rock, and Natty Greens. Big 12 foot TV and HUGE tent for the expo and finish line. I ran the full and course nutrition was spot on. Keep up the great work Wrightsville Beach, this race is on its way to becoming a top pick. Thanks for a great experience!

"Nice try, but wouldn't run this one again" (about: 2012)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Wilmington Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

So this was my 4th marathon. I was enticed by the 'flat, fast race' and 'ocean views'. Not true for either. The course is flat, but the loops and redundency did not lead to a faster race for me. The expo was limited which should have been my first clue. The start in the dark (very poor lighting) was disappointing at best and an indicator of what was ahead. Never saw the ocean...we started in the dark and it doesn't take long to run by the water (its very brief). The loops in the gated community were incredibly boring (the spectators and volunteers there were great and I was very appreciative), but really multiple loops here and at the end? With few runners, it was a lonely course. Positives: The spectators along Military Cutoff and in the gated community were wonderful! Ample water stations and gels. However, I wouldn't run it again nor would I recommend it for the full marathon.
