"A great first marathon; flat, friendly and roomy" (about: 2004)

I ran this marathon the first time to support a friend and first-time runner. The second time I ran it with 2 of my senior students. Both were memorable experiences. The course was flat, friendly and not too crowded. Perfect for first-timers and those wanting to set a PB.

I have run the QCM Half the last two years and have one correctable beef, and one general one. The one that can be fixed? The fact that the runners compete with cars in and around Douglas Park. This is a major pain, and I hope that the issue is addressed in the redesigned course for 2006. The one that can't? The lack of spectators for such long stretches.... Oh well!

It was my first time running the QCM. I loved the course. The out and back route keeps your surrounded with people so you never feel alone. Spectators for the last 5 miles are few but with only approx 300 full marathoners it is understandable. The last quarter mile was awesome as they were hundreds of people lined up as you ran into the finish. You could hear your name being announced as you ran to the finish which was a big plus. Thermal blanket for each runner is a a great idea. The weather was perfect. I really like the idea of the 5k starting loop that allows you to go by the start/finish line again. It allows you to warm up and then discard clothing to friends or family. Overall I though it was a well done marathon. The power gels were at the proper miles for me anyway. I look forward to participating again.

"Awesome Race!" (about: 2005)

The Queen City Marathon is a fantastic race! I've only run two other marathons: Invermere (Loop the Lake) and Chicago. The Regina race matches Invermere for scenery and Chicago for crowd support and hoopla. People might not think of Regina as the most beautiful city in Canada but this course is very scenic, all of it around lakes, through parks, along creeks. It might be a slight exaggeration saying QCM matches Chicago for hoopla, so maybe I'll qualify that by saying on a slightly smaller scale. Still, there are bands, announcers, musicians, piles of people cheering, great aid stations. I felt supported the whole race. I haven't seen such enthusiastic volunteers since Sydney Olympics (where, I'd better mention, I was a spectator not, by a long shot, a competitor). All the cheering kids kept me smiling every step of the 42.2kms. I'd definitely do this race again. Now if only they could do something about the wind. I spent a month before the race worrying about the wind and my worries were well founded (winds gusting to 60kms/hr on race day). It's Regina--better chance than not the marathon is going to fall on a windy day. The good news is sometimes that wind's at your back. [One more thing: I ran part of the race with a woman who'd had a baby only 11 months ago but I didn't get a chance to see/congratulate her at the end. If she reads this, I'd like to let her know she was a huge inspiration. Way to go!]

"My first full marathon and it was great" (about: 2004)

After reading P.N. of Winnipeg's comments I just had to add my two bits. My wife ran the half and raved about the oatmeal cookies. Almost everyone I talked too raved about the cookies. Unfortunately for me I finished well after all the cookies were gone. This was my second time at QCM and I will be attending for a third this year. The plan is to finish in time to get my cookie this year.

"It was my first!" (about: 2004)

QCM 2004 was my first marathon, and overall it was a good experience. The race was very well organized, though I didn't like the pizza box race kits - mine was mistaken for garbage and cleaned up by the hotel cleaning staff! They had to retreive it (with my race bib and timing chip) from the bin!

I thought the food at the pasta party was better than at the Manitoba Marathon, but still not great. However, unlike another commenter, I LOVED the giant oatmeal raisin cookies at the finish line. I never expected to have a full meal there - what was provided was plenty.

I wasn't wild about the course - the first half is run along with the half-marathoners and the support and energy there is good. The second half includes a long out-and-back on the bike trails that seemed a lot longer in reality than it looked on the map. The last leg was through a residential area, but didn't seem to be very well marked, and by the time I was going through, it felt deserted. Not much fan support in the second half, where you need it the most.

However, the medal was big and shiny, and the long-sleeved finisher's shirt is a favorite. Also, the 'official' hotel - the Hotel Saskatchewan - was a great treat. Very old-fashioned and classy.

Overall, it was a great experience. I'll be back in 2005 to try for a PR!

"Great Organization & Fans " (about: 2004)

Lots of aid stations/helpers with a choice of water or Gatorade. Entertainment was great. Thanks to the volunteers and the great spectators who cheered us on.

Wet sponge's would have been nice in the last half.

Now that Regina has such a great event drawing in more people, perhaps the city will consider re-surfacing the roads on the last 10 KM of the course.

"beautiful day beautiful route" (about: 2004)

This is my second QCM, definitely NOT my last. I enjoyed the layout of the route, the loops made good use of the water stations, fans were great, and the day itself was perfect, not raining like we have had all summer in Winnipeg

"Great event with great potential!" (about: 2004)

Every year the QCM gets better and better. What I like is that the volunteer committee take suggestions from previous years and implement them the next. They listen and this shows the race has great potential. It is very much a race for runners. The personal touches and 'coziness' are a welcome treat from so many others races that seem like big cattle calls. It is well worth the trip to Regina!

"First Rate Festival Atmosphere." (about: 2004)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Regina Queen City Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first run in the QC marathon and it lived up to all the great things I had heard from previous participants. The organization was great, the course is excellent. However for me the crowning jewel was the atmosphere that you have captured. The festival atmosphere was electric. The entertainment, spectators and supportive volunteers were awesome. I only ran the half-marathon so I can only imagine how much more appreciative the full marathoners would be. I can't wait for next year.
