"Overall, a great success that continues to grow." (about: 2006)

The number of runners continues to rise, but the runner tag, bib and packages were all distributed without a fuss.

Run day was well chosen, weather well harmonised, and drinks spots well scattered. Good run atmosphere allowed me to complete 21 KM in record time (personal best).

But the web photo gallery is a failure. I got my photos in 2005. This time, 3 out of 4 members in my group did not get even half their photos. I was disappointed with the cameramen.

I will run again in 2007 to break my own personal best.

"Well organized, but prepare to sweat" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Singapore International Marathon

By far the most difficult marathon I have done, despite the cool (by Singapore standards) conditions this year (nice cloud cover meant no sun while I was out on the course).

Organization was very good - great website, easy number pickup for international runners. Start is in a good location near the city center. The drink stations on the course were very good, with plenty of water and sports drinks. Gels were available in places. Plenty of drinks at the finish. As part of the race packet, you get a cool bag and a running top. The finisher's shirt and medal are also very good.

Course is OK, taking in the marina area and out through East Coast Park - at least they try to run where there is some shade! It's very flat and completely closed to vehicle traffic.

Only thing I didn't like was the half marathon and 10K runners having to negotiate their way through a lot of the marathon field.

Overall a good event - I enjoyed the good course and organization, and I hope this marathon will continue to get better.

"OK race" (about: 2006)

The race was ok. I did not find the route boring. As for the weather, it was okay because I live in Singapore - and it could have been worse. But the finish was not very well planned, as they were out of finisher T's. I think organizers should have been better prepared for this rather than run out of the shirts.

"It just gets better - even the weather!" (about: 2006)

Returned to the Singapore Marathon after a four-year break and this must rate as one of the best. Organization was spectacular - water stops every KM, food stops and power gel stops. They made it even better with rollerbladers on the course carrying even more supplies - what more could you ask for? Well, perhaps some decent weather; and this year we had cloudy skies, a little bit of rain, and all-time highs of humidity. With 3,000 more runners - taking it to 10,000 - the race is even more fun, and the support improved with a great finish. The only problem is for the half and 10K runners who get caught up with us slow guys. Overall, it's right up there with my favorite marathons!

"Very well organized; very well done." (about: 2006)

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

I'm very new to races and a real amateur, so I only took part in the 10K race. But I can say that this is a very well organized race. There was a water station after the first 3K, and subsequently every 1.5K. There was also sports drinks every 3K after the first 6K. There was also heat-rub lotion available after every 6K. Kilometer markers at every KM.

Will definitely run the Sin Int'l Marathon 21K race next year, before I conquer my first marathon in 2008. ;)

"Course a bit boring, well organised (except ba" (about: 2005)

The worst aspect of this event was the collection of participants' bags and belongings from the trucks lined up near the finishing line. It was utter chaos in those trucks which meant exhausted runners had to queue under the blazing sun, some for nearly an hour, just to retrieve their belongings. Unless this is better organised this year I would recommend not bringing anything for retrieval after the race.

"Earlier Start Time Please!" (about: 2005)

6-10 previous marathons | 2 Singapore International Marathons

The organisation was great, with plenty of water. In 2004, there was a water shortage near the end of the course for the slower runners. Little crowd support along the course. But not unexpected given the humidity and the heat. Kudos to those who actually came out in the heat to support the runners along the course and at the end. Overall, the entire event felt better organized and more enjoyable than last year's. Finally, my plea to the organizers to consider starting one hour earlier for next year's event.

The reviews on heat and humidity can't possibly describe the actual conditions. If you plan to run this, prepare for the weather in any way possible. Unless you live in SE Asia, this may not be possible. The course is great - flat, shaded, mostly through parks. The organization is superb and the spectators, while not numerous, are very friendly and spirited. As another reviewer said, there are plenty of runners to keep you company. My 4:30:00 goal was toast by about the 10k mark, and I ended up at 5:53:00. If they could figure out a way to cut the temperature in half, this would be the perfect race.

"Challenging 'Destination' Marathon" (about: 2005)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Singapore International Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

For a city with the location of Singapore (very close to the equator at sea level), anyone who signed up for the marathon pretty much knew what they were in for. Yes, the course is thankfully flat and not overly scenic, but much of it is shaded. The crowds were also sparse but with so many runners, you always had company. It was a very well-supported race (from an aid station standpoint). Potential improvements would include music at some points along the route and additional cheer groups (perhaps use some of that prize money to provide the student groups with donations). There were also lengthy queues at baggage pick-up afterwards, but that is a fairly simple logistical issue.

Overall, I was very pleased with the experience and it was a very smooth operation--from packet pick-up to race finish. Finally, my compliments to the runner 'schwag' provided. Two technical fabric t-shirts by Adidas that I will wear over and over (as opposed to the typical cotton race shirt)--all for a low entry fee.

M. D. from Asia (12/8/2005)
"Hot, Humid and Empty" (about: 2005)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Singapore International Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

There are 5 things you need to know about the Singapore Marathon: It's 1) hot; 2) humid; 3) hot & humid; 4) ungodly hot & humid; and 5) all of the above. Even with the 6am start, the air is still akin to a warm, wet blanket. My HR was through the roof by 5K and it was a struggle to the end.

Spectators? Were there any??? I didn't see more than a dozen the whole course. They shuffle you off to two parks so as not to tie up traffic. Actually, that's not fair - unshaded blacktop would have been living hell by 9am. Just don't expect too much in terms of crowd support to keep you moving.

Organization-wise, though, there are few to compare. Chartered does a great job at this and other marathons in Asia - more portable toilets than runners it almost seems. Water was plentiful, though the bottles were a hazard and somewhat wasteful.

Only negative about the course, besides being somewhat boring was the number of sharp turns and runs into opposing traffic. Nothing more tiring than dodging traffic that's crept over the cones.

If you want to race Singapore, just remember the above 5 points and you'll be fine. I started training in September and was up to 3 layers of long sleeves by last week. A hot steaming towel over my mouth was probably the only thing that could have helped more.
