On May 4, 2025, runners across the country will celebrate one of the most exciting weekends in spring racing, as two of America’s best-loved marathons – the The Hoag OC Marathon in Costa Mesa, California, and the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, Ohio – take the spotlight. Both events, though wildly different in vibe and terrain, share a common thread: they deliver unforgettable race experiences filled with energy, community, and the pure joy of running.

The OC Marathon: Speed, Sun, and SoCal Dreams

In sunny Southern California, the OC Marathon promises a fast, scenic tour of Orange County’s best landscapes. Runners will start near the Pacific coast in Newport Beach, taking in the ocean air as they weave through picturesque neighborhoods and nature preserves like Upper Newport Bay. The point-to-point course, with its net downhill profile, offers runners a strong shot at personal bests and Boston Qualifying times, making it a magnet for competitive athletes and first-timers alike.

With more than 20,000 runners expected across the marathon, half marathon, and 5K events, the OC Marathon will feel like a massive, moving celebration. After the early miles’ gentle hills, the course flattens out into Costa Mesa, finishing at the lively OC Fair and Event Center. Add in SoCal’s typically cool morning temperatures and a lively post-race festival complete with craft beer, live music, and beachy vibes, and it’s easy to see why the OC Marathon remains a must-do spring race.

The Flying Pig Marathon: Cincinnati’s Rolling Block Party

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Cincinnati will be rolling out the pink carpet for one of the most beloved marathons anywhere – the Flying Pig Marathon. Born from local pride and a sense of humor in 1999, the Flying Pig has become a weekend-long festival of running, fun, and community.

The marathon course is both scenic and challenging, leading runners through downtown Cincinnati, across the river into Kentucky, and back through the hills and parks of the Queen City. Runners will tackle some serious climbs, especially through Eden Park, but the reward is breathtaking views of the Ohio River and relentless crowd support.

Over 40,000 participants will take part in the weekend’s events, which include not just the marathon, but a half marathon, 10K, 5K, and even fun runs for kids and dogs. The Flying Pig’s spirit is infectious: expect to see themed aid stations, volunteers in pig costumes, and some of the most creative race swag (and finisher medals) anywhere in the running world.

Two Different Journeys, One Shared Passion

Whether you’re chasing a personal record along the smooth, sun-drenched paths of Orange County or powering up the rolling hills of Cincinnati surrounded by pigs, pirates, and cheering locals, May 4, 2025, will showcase two perfect examples of why running is so much more than a sport – it’s a celebration.

Both The Hoag OC Marathon and the Flying Pig Marathon are reminders that while every race has its own personality, the heart of the running community – perseverance, joy, and connection – is universal. Whether you’re headed west for a beachside sprint or to the Midwest for a quirky, unforgettable adventure, May 4 is shaping up to be one of the most exciting weekends on the 2025 racing calendar.
