The weather for the 2001 running of the New York City Marathon – temperature in the low 50s, light wind, clear skies: it was nearly perfect for the runners and perfect for the spectators.

After the September 11 tragedy, the race was run for multiple reasons. Of course it was the NYC Marathon, one of the great marathons in the world, and also the USA Marathon championships. But, this year many runners were running for those who had been lost in the tragedies, for friends, for America or for world peace. As a matter of strength, only a few didn’t show up for the start of the race. Security was tight – but the race went off on time.

At the end of the day, it was a day of records and champions. We were there to bring you the following reports:

Blow by blow coverage of the NYC Marathon 2001 races:
NYC Marathon 2001: Men’s Race
NYC Marathon 2001: Women’s Race
NYC Marathon 2001: American Race
NYC Marathon 2001: The Wheelchair Race
