Race Information: Easter Marathon Runoff
The cancellation of the Trails End Marathon was a disappointment to many of us who ran it routinely. Filling the void with a substitute event was Bob Green, race director extraordinaire, who added the Easter Marathon to his Easter Runoff, a medley of running events at Millersylvania State Park near Tumwater, WA. In addition to the marathon there were races of one and four miles and a half marathon… plus a Kid’s Run and an Egg Hunt for the younger set.
Before the 11:00 a.m. start on Saturday, April 22, 2000, the day before Easter, Lenore and I visited with running friends Judy Fisher, Diane Wilcox, Jon Nevitt, Mel Preedy, Robert and Grace Reed, and Jimmy Smith and his family. We also became acquainted with Ed Dzwonkowski, John Thelan, Scott Kinkele, David Hays and Evan Fagan at the picnic shelter (race headquarters) after the finish.
The marathon and half marathon followed the 1999 Christmas Marathon course as an out-and-back route. The course ran south and west of the park going out on flat to gently rolling terrain in a rural setting. There was good running weather with air temperatures in the 50’s. Partly cloudy skies followed an initial rainy period, and winds were from 0-15 miles per hour.
The race was won by Andrew Rhodes, 32, of Fort Lewis, WA, in 2:57:03. Tammie Morris, 32, of Buckley, WA, was the first woman with a time of 3:43:14.
My race went well. I’ve had my share of bad days in marathons, but my first Easter Marathon turned out to be my fastest marathon in two years. I ran a 3:46:12 (8:38) which was a Boston Marathon qualifier and put me in 8th place of 18 finishers.. first 70+.
Lenore assisted the many volunteers on hand by helping with day of race registration and food & fire preparation in the picnic shelter. We enjoyed the Easter Races and expect to include it on our yearly marathon schedule.
