After finishing second last year, Lokedi returned stronger and outkicked two-time defending champion Hellen Obiri in the final stretch through downtown Boston. Her performance marks one of the most dominant finishes in recent race memory, beating Obiri by 19 seconds and eclipsing Buzunesh Deba’s 2014 course record. Lokedi, 31, a former NCAA champion for the University of Kansas, credited her ability to hold on through Boston’s infamous hills and dig deep in the closing miles.
In the men’s race, Kenya’s John Korir surged ahead around mile 20 and never looked back, finishing in 2:04:45.
