Entering the race was a bit complicated, online registration only for people living in Japan (or at least have a Japanese address to use), I had to send in a paper application and figure out a complex bank transfer, but in the end it all worked out. Like many races in Japan, if you are not registered with the running federation (again, for those living in Japan), you will start at the back, meaning, instead of being placed in the group with numbers 200+, I started around 4000+. So, the start was a bit of a mess and took at least 1 mile to get through the crowd and reach my pace.

That said, after 2km I had plenty of people to pace with and/or chase, and spectators lined the entire course, which is definitely fast. Beppu is a great place to spend a few extra days after the race, literally visited the best onsen and ate the best sushi in my life. Overall it is extremely memorable, I definitely recommend it and will be back, just if you are sub-3 hour, it is worthwhile to use a friend that has a Japanese address so you can actually start with those going your pace. Organisation is fantastic, it's all about the runners (not the sponsors, the TV or the expo), no problems with finding your rightful place at the start. Facilities before running are good, relaxed atmosphere. Geared towards experienced runners; 3hr 30mins cut off time, but if you're happy with this and are looking for a PB it's a good choice. Beppu is a nice place too, small town atmosphere and a good relaxing weekend.
