Race Organizer Comments
A flat marathon with 6 hours to complete it.
Joan Antoni Monferrer
(8/16/04)
The start and finish, are located in front of the Montjuïc fountains. The route crosses Barcelona transversally, following an attractive ininerary through the city, much faster, and where the competitors can achieve their goal of beating their best personal record.

From start to finish this is a great race. Expo good too with a free pasta party. It's growing in size, but lots of room to run at your pace. Beware of the slight incline on the last 2km. In my opinion, better than Paris and Berlin.

Fast course though a lovely city. Very well organised before, during and after the race. The free breakfast run on Saturday morning is also excellent and has a great atmosphere. Expect I will be back for more.

Mostly flatish, good spectator support and organisation. Did not go to pasta party as I've never been to a good one in 10 previous marathons (apart from New York which was great). The city is nice to see as well and not expensive compared with some european cities. Expo was the usual story - lots of expensive gear that you have already, but at least it was at the same place as the start of the race. Some races have them miles away and not convenient (Rome for e.g.).

This was my first marathon (2012), although have spectated at others. This is a very well organised event. The course is an enjoyable route and is pretty much all in the city. It takes you around many of the touristy places so makes it an enjoyable experience for those who are interested in the surroundings. The start and finish are excellent.
The course is a bit hilly early on 0-3 miles and again 8.5-10 or so. It has a tough 1.5 mile incline at the end. However, in between it is pretty much flat or downhill. As mentioned there is more downhill than uphill which is great.
Weather was great- approx 11-16/17 for the most part, the high buildings provide lots of cover from the sun. However, it is a bit more open from 28k to the end.
The organisation was excellent, with exception to the toilet provisions.
Collection of number from hotel was easy, as arrived late.
Water stations were brilliant with water and powerade provided. Powerade was in cups but you could get bottles also. Lots of sponges in between. I think it was also possible to get gels along the way.
Only negative re. organisation was the lack of toilets...didn't see too many.
There were some patches with lots of noisy supporters, however there were many parts where there wasn't too much support. However these didnt last too long. I expect this to improve as the marathon in Barcelona is growing rapidly year on year.
Overall, I really enjoyed this race and will definitely go back again. An excellent first marathon to do for anyone thinking of it. A great city also.
(But beware the heat and the tough finish - the heat could be an issue if it gets up too high)

I thought the marathon was well organised. The refreshment breaks were well timed and enjoyed the fruit at the last four stops.
The portable bathrooms are lacking, however comparable or better than the Paris Marathon. I have noticed there is no shame going to the bathroom on the side of the course, if it's relatively private (both men and women).
I loved the course, even the hills were not too bad, it seemed there was more downhill than uphill. The spectators were encouraging, however there could have been more.
I thought the energy at the start of the race was amazing... The music was great. The finish was beautiful... The fountains were gorgeous and people were everywhere.

I really can and will recommend Barcelona marathon. It is about a week ago and I can't stop thinking about how great it was. I ran my best time so far. The crowd was amazing, the organisation very very very good! The route - also amazing. You could see all the nicest places in Barcelona :) WOW!
Water, fruit, isotonics, sponges. Everything was there and enough for everyone.
YOU SHOULD GO TO BARCELONA and RUN YOUR MARATHON OF YOUR LIFE :)
WOW, WOW, WOW !!!

This is a good one! The organisation was brilliant and one of the most interesting routes you could ever ask for. It was a hot day but because the course remains within the city confines, there is plenty of shade from taller buildings. Crowd support was excellent and the city enjoys the event which combined creates a brilliant atmosphere.
I arrived late on Saturday evening from London and organised to pick my race number up at another hotel. This was well planned and an excellent service the marathon organisers provided.
The only issues I had was that I booked a hotel a bit far out of the city centre (my fault) and for the first time I never took my wife to accompany me as she was busy elsewhere. Make sure I dont do that again is it was a bit lonely.

This was my first marathon and I wanted it to be special. Barcelona was everything I wished for, for a first marathon.
Organised. The expo was easily located and it provided an awesome vibe. The starting venue offered an amazing view, but pretty much like the rest of the course, it was pretty scenic.
The course was pretty flat. There were some lone stretches but otherwise, the support was amazing. 'Venga Venga!' (if I recall correctly). There were interesting entertainment and performances along the way.
There were quite breathtaking views at points of the route. I chose not to see much of Barca till the marathon so I was pretty blown away by most of the sights.
My only complain was that the isotonic drink / food pretty much ran out towards the end.
Otherwise, an Amazing Experience. I would run it again someday, after I'm done with the 20 odd on my to run list.

In a word, awesome.
Despite this being my slowest ever marathon (due to injury and workload ruining my training) I loved this race - the best city marathon I have done and the best atmosphere.
Flawless organisation, good medal, techinical teeshirt and souvenir bag, good communications, personalised online race videos, plenty of water, sponges and energy drinks... I doubt London can be this good.
The race starts at Placa Espana, despite the volume of runners it was easy to meet my clubmates due to all thelandmarks and space available. The tube ride was surreal, excited lycra clad runners en route to the start juxtaposed with Barcelonas all night party people on their way home.
The start was eclectic - ticker tape, music, cheering, plety of spectators.
I doubt there is a city better equipped to hos this marathon. The roars of the crowd, the fiesta atmosphere, the music, drum bands... all carried me when my undertraining slowed me down from mile 20.
Efficient finish process with some nice touches. They put the medal round your neck. I;ve been to too manyraces where it's simply handed to you in a good bag. The Catalans know how to let you have your moment of glory.
Plenty of communications after the race including via social media.
Well done Barca, this deserves to be a major. The most exciting race I have done.
