"Low-key marathon, with great logistics" (about: 2009)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

The logistics were easy: fly in, take the shuttle from the airport to the host hotel, walk two blocks to the expo, see your choices for dinner, take the bus to the start from right in front of hotel, finish about five blocks away, and take advantage of the late check out.

Nice touches included the luminaries and guitarist at the start, organized expo, announcing finishers, native dancers at the finish, family-friendly atmosphere, and hot air balloons.

This is a nice, small, friendly marathon... with a great downhill section in the middle. I didn't notice the uphill in the beginning, as it was dark.

"GREAT LITTLE MARATHON" (about: 2009)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Mexico Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

This is a great marathon. I would do it again! From the bus to the start, through the aid stations, and to the finish line, everything ran smoothly and was well organized. There were next to no spectators, though the folks using the bike path cheered us on and were friendly. There was one man in a white shirt who I must have passed 5 times, and he always cheered me on. Thanks to him, I had a following! Thanks, mystery guy, for the support. Also, the race director and Pam are great; they helped us out with our questions, and took care of us when I forgot my jacket at the finish.

The course is challenging over the first eight miles, since it was a rolling, gradual incline - especially for us flat-landers. The next six are downhill, and the view is awesome as you get to see the hot air balloons. The rest of the course was either on coned roads or a bike path. I didn't find it boring at all; the views were interesting and different from Florida.

My only complaint was the host hotel, The Hotel Albuquerque. There was a wedding party playing loud music in the courtyard until 10, and then there were other partiers in the courtyard for the rest of the night. The music was so loud that we had to turn our TV up to hear it. And when I called down to the desk, they were rude and didn't seem to care that the marathon folks were being disturbed. And they did nothing to maintain any quiet the rest of the night.

"Limited overall awards" (about: 2009)

The bus service to the starting line was very efficient. The course was not terribly challenging, and the few miles on the bike trail were boring. There were few spectators on the course, but they were great in cheering for everybody. This race recognized only the first male and female overall; there were no award for 2nd or 3rd, or for Masters for that matter. So many fast runners left without an award and so many beautiful handmade awards were left on the table. Some runners enjoy displaying their accomplishments; maybe that's why this race only has about 500 runners?

"Overall a great experience" (about: 2009)

I highly suggest running this marathon. Expo was small but efficient and nice speaker in Jeff Galloway. Marathon start at 5:30 a.m. was great as you ran 8 miles or so before the sun came up for a beautiful sunrise. The next few miles are downhill to a flat second half. Nice post-finish area, with plenty of food and drinks. Hand-painted medal also! It was a perfect family weekend, as the host hotels, finish area and Old Town had lots of family activities, all in walking distance of each other. Buses to the start leave from the host hotel, so it's very easy logistically. The Bernalillo Wine Festival and Santa Fe are also close by, so there's plenty to see and do!

"What's not to like?" (about: 2009)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Mexico Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

This was a low-key, very enjoyable event. It was held on Labor Day weekend, which made it easy to travel to from out of town. It's fairly small, so there were no crowds to fight during the expo, or to fight in order to get to the starting line. The weather was in the 60's and (of course) dry - very comfortable. And lots of 50-staters were there with colorful stories to share.

If you like crowds cheering you on, this is the wrong race to enter. There were fewer than 100 spectators total during the first 23 miles or so. At times it felt like a long training run with water stops.

A suggestion for the organizers and the local police: The majority the first half is run on the shoulder of a four-lane road, but none of the lanes were closed. This despite the fact that the race started in the wee hours of the morning and there was very little traffic. This caused runners to be needlessly bunched up. It was dark, so every now and then someone ran into a traffic cone separating the road and the shoulder. This was dangerous and unnecessary. On top of this, there was occasional garbage to dodge. Shouldn't someone have made sure the race path was clear?

If you don't train in high altitude, you'll want to take it slow. I had some lightheaded moments, but nothing too severe.

"Nice three-in-one marathon" (about: 2009)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 New Mexico Marathon

I usually don't get involved in postings, but after seeing several negative comments about this marathon, I wanted to voice my opinion.

I've run 8 previous marathons, 7 of which had over 5,000 participants (Marine Corps and Flying Pig). To be able to run without being shoved aside, bumped into, etc., was a welcoming experience.

The view from beginning to end was tranquil, which helps you focus on your running strategies. Non-participants along the trail or out on their own exercise routine provided encouragement.

I cant believe anyone would think this was a boring marathon. If it was, then their expectations for a marathon are unrealistic. Lastly, the medal is beautiful, and I appreciate the artist who designed and made it.

Thanks to Albuquerque for your time, effort and work.

"Most fun I've had at a marathon" (about: 2009)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 New Mexico Marathon

This was just a mid-season race for me, so I was just here for a good time and to run somewhere that I hadn't run before. The course was great, although the last 10 (flat) miles were the hardest for me. The first uphill miles are not a problem at all. The downhill section went on and on. Hydration stations worked out well. The course was well marked, with mile markers out for each mile. Volunteers were enthusiastic and did an awesome job. I could do without the bike path part, but that is my only complaint. Nice finish line area, refreshments perfect and nice medals and awards. It was fun to be able to sit outside in the wonderful New Mexico weather and watch the awards presentation. Old Town was a perfect spot for the hotels, as it is an easy walk to plenty of stores and restaurants. Highly recommend this race.

"Beautiful Course" (about: 2009)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 New Mexico Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

This was an absolutely beautiful course. The race started at 5:30 a.m., when it was still fully dark out, so you get to see the sunrise over the Sandia Mountains. It was great looking out at the purple sky and the sun reflecting off the mountains.

There is a great downhill of about 2-3 miles, which not only speeds up your pace, but also provides a great view of the city and the numerous hot air balloons populating the sky.

The marathon itself is pretty small compared to other major cities, but it had a big-marathon feel. There was live music following the race, and food and drink were provided. I'm really shocked that more marathoners don't run this race (this year fielded about 500). It's beautiful, and it's also very flat.

"well organized, nice downhill" (about: 2009)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Mexico Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

This is a nice, small marathon, without a lot of hype and flair. The course has a nice, long downhill at about mile 8. A good share of the course is run on the road with cones separating the runners from the traffic, but it seemed to be no problem. I never felt any concern for the traffic, and I inhaled very little exhaust. This isn't exactly the prettiest place to run, but the people are very friendly and the organization was excellent. The spectators were sparse, but I kind of prefer it that way.

"Point-to-point race with an early start!" (about: 2009)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Mexico Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 2

This was a great race in a great city. In 2009, we had great weather and outstanding organization. There was an EARLY start; the bus leaves by 5 a.m. for a 5:30 start! It's not a large marathon, with approximately 400 runners this year. But it was a good one for New Mexico, and for Labor Day Weekend. There is an 8-mile, gradual incline from the start, and then a huge downhill followed by a flat finish. Traffic was a bit heavy for the last part, and there was minimal fan support, but overall, it was a great race!
