(about: 2013) 50+ previous marathons \| 1 Cape Town Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I was visiting South Africa and decided to participate in the Cape Town Marathon...and I was not disappointed. The city is beautiful, and views of Table Mountain were stunning throughout the race. The course was well marked, and volunteers were friendly and helpful. The other runners were great as well. I was 'adopted' by a local running group so I left with a great medal (featured Table Mt.), new friends, and great memories. Of course, I stayed three weeks touring...and it was fabulous!

Liked the start at the stadium - lots of room and easy to find. Coke and water bags at every stop. Liked the ending along the shoreline. If you like spectators and cheering this is not your race; if you like a great location, this is your race. Advertised as an 8 hour time limit but it appeared to be shutting down before that - unofficially! Well organized. Very Small Expo - it's there to get you your packet & number. The city of Cape Town is fabulous.

G. from Amsterdam (2/2/2013) "Well-organized race" (about: 2012) 2 previous marathons \| 1 Cape Town Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I looked for a unique spot for my first marathon and Cape Town did not disappoint. It is a wonderful city you should visit once in your life. Take the time to visit the attractions it has to offer. We stayed at the Westin, walking distance from the start. The start is early and the bag drop disorganized. The race is guntime only. In the first kilometers, there are not too many spectators, but as you get further in the race, more people appear. The weather was cold and drizzling, but nevertheless I enjoyed the race. Lots of water (in small plastic bags - wonderful) and cola. No energy drinks. The last few km were rough, with the wind blowing the seawater onto the boardwalk. Nice finish near Greenpoint Stadium. Would be nice if we could finish inside the Stadium.

(about: 1999) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Cape Town Marathon COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 I ran the race in 1999 as I searched for an African marathon for my six continents project. Going there I had taken gifts from our town of Walsall and presented them to the mayor the day after the race. Indeed, so helpful was she that I got invited to their 'Many Nation, One Culture' event addressed by President Mandela. At the end of the talk he moved to go out through the crowds and the mayor, recognizing me, pulled me over to shake hands with the man himself. What a start to my marathon ambassadoring! The race itself was hot and early. Indeed, after the initial first two miles the sweat was pouring out. The constant presence of Table Mountain acts like a homing beacon to draw you on. Water stations had been thoughtfully distanced and actually were plentiful. Crowd support was lacking but, hey, that time of the morning everyone should be tucked up in bed, not running around the city! Don't miss an excursion out to Gaansbrai and the chance to chase after great white sharks, as well as throwing up your breakfast!
