| 1 All-Out Beat the Heat Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 First year race out of long-time promoter All-Out Multisport, and pretty well done. The course is 95% on bike path or dirt road or dirt trail, only 5% on paved public roads, which was pretty nice. Not having cars around was very nice, but being absolutely alone for long stretches had its drawbacks. It had 3 out-and-backs so you could see your competitor's faces and splits on 3 occasions, which was nice. But a lot of people don't like u-turns in a race. The beginning is fairly hilly, and the final 15 or so miles is relatively flat, with a few small rollers here and there. The marathon runs head-on into the half, 10k, and 5k fields on a 5-6' wide path, so that was tight at times as people chose to run 2-across. Overall the course is pretty good - a little unique with the 3 u-turns, but it's pretty good. Cons: there was no lead bike, and the volunteers at a junction pointed the whole field the wrong way. That's a bummer. It didn't change anything due to the out-and-back nature of the course, but it was still distressing. We got a ton of rain and snow in the days leading up to the race, so despite the race-day weather being great (40s and clouds), the course was very muddy, and annoyingly so after a while. The RD put out wash buckets you could step in, but I didn't see any in the final 10 miles when the mud was pretty soupy. That trail is usually ok, this was just bad luck. Pros: this was a nice, controlled, safe marathon. It was nice being on trails basically the whole time. The raffle prizes were awesome, the post-race food was good, the shwag bag was good. There was plenty of aid stations along the way with the standard race fare, so that was good. Overall, it was a pretty good race. I'd recommend it for someone who might like a smaller field and quieter setting. I'm not sure how fast it is -the mud skewed my perspective of that. |
