Most marathons are point to point, out and back or circuitous routes through cities and you don't get a visual of the distance covered. This course is around the lake, but because of other scenery and landscape you only see glimpses of it for the first 23 or so miles. However, when you're close to the finish, an opening through the trees provides a vista of the whole lake and the distance you ran. Thinking about that view and the emotions it stirred still gives me goose bumps. If you seek an awe-inspiring marathon with its attendant high, run this race. Another bonus of this small run is bragging rights for placement. I placed 2nd in women's, (there were only 2 of us) and 24th overall, (I finished second to last). This event has remained my all time favorite.

A wonderful rolling course through a beautiful rural setting in the heart of Cape Breton. A little quiet around the course but the relay runners keep things interesting. Hospitality was wonderful. I would run it again in a heart beat. This race should be supported..

"high quality event for a small marathon" (about: 2005)

What a great little race! There are very few runners doing the full marathon, but the race has a cozy, intimate feel to it. The race organizers seem to know what runners want, and they give it to them. The course meanders about 3/4 of the way around the lake and there are constant small rises and dips. If you have knee troubles, you might want to avoid this race because so much of it is on canted roads. Nice medal and long-sleeved shirt too.

Lake Ainslie is on Cape Breton island in Nova Scotia which celebrates its Celtic culture. The race incorporates this with a kilted piper at the start, and taped fiddle music at one of the water stops. And it's a fantastic place to holiday post-marathon - lots of beaches, lighthouses, seascapes and very close to the famous Cabot Trail. It's a good idea to stay at one of the local bed and breakfasts (the Tulloch Inn took excellent care of us).

Just one gripe. There should be markers stating how many kms run and how many left to go. Let's say every 2 km or so. But on the whole, a wonderful race.

Did the half in '04. If you're into small-town runs with great support and great atmosphere, this is an awesome run for you. Loved it and have recommended it to every runner with ears.

Tired of Teams in Training? Heard enough rock & roll bands along the course? Don't need to hear anymore aging running superstars speak at the expo? Frustrated with thousands of runners bumping their way along the first miles of the marathon? Well, head to Lake Ainslie next year for the perfect antidote!!

Small, low-key, friendly, and WELL ORGANIZED, this is more like an early morning run with your buddies than a marathon. Sure, it's 26.2 miles, but the only distractions are the scenery. Only 28 runners ran the full marathon, along with another 50 or so halfers and some relay teams. The race is all hills, but nothing steep or terribly long. Vince, the race director, could have a successful career as a big time race director/organizer if he decides to give up teaching.

Cape Breton, with its strong Scottish and Irish cultural identity, is an amazing place to vacation. And we took another poster's advice and stayed at the Glenora Distillery. We were glad we did. Only 10 minutes from the start, superb food in the restaurant, and single malt whiskey to die for.

Glenora Distillery was a great place to stay. Very close to the race start. The single malt wiskey and live fiddle/piano music was very relaxing the night before the race. The course was gentle rolling hills around the lake. Volunteers of all ages were inspiring. The half marathon was great, I'll do the full next year.

"One of the VERY BEST" (about: 2003)

This little marathon was the BEST experience ever for a slow turtle runner-walker like me - even though I did the entire race alone. It was scenic, with lots of variety, very kind and friendly aid station volunteers and the best cheering squad ever as I crossed the finish line! Every marathon runner should add this race to his/her list. Nova Scotia is beautiful, the organization was great, The MacLeod Inn (one of the suggested places to stay) was delightful and I WILL go do this one again.

You are bused to the start. The marathon runs around Lake Ainslie, getting some outstanding views. Some wildlife may cross the course. Wonderful pasta dinner is served the night before and a lunch is provided on race day. Very well supported by the local people. The last individual is escorted in by the local fire department (about .2 mile). Wonderful area to visit. Would do it again.
