"Great small venue marathon." (about: 2017)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 1 This marathon is a rails to trails asphalt path double out and back. There are no hills to speak of and the scenery is beautiful. 7 hour time limit is good for all paces and the race is very casual but well organized. Aid stations every 2 miles, some with food and candy, some with just water and gatorade. This would be a great place to PR.

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 The two previous posters gave thoughtful reviews. I ran the associated half marathon, which is the identical course but I have some unique points. Pro's -Very fast course. Perfect for PRs -No traffic -Lots of shade and trees to shield you from wind -Pre-race and same-day packet pickup -Reasonable price -Easy parking -Plenty of porta-johns Con's -No mile markers. Bring your own GPS -Need Gatorade at more aid stations -If you are fast (I am not) then you will be lonely. -No USATF certification yet for either course -Difficult to spectate as the course goes into the boondocks (okay with me)

"Great small marathon in Maryland" (about: 2016)

| 1 Western Maryland Rail Trail Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This is a very well-done marathon. Very organized on scenic, paved trail. Out and back twice for marathoners, but this was fine with me. Very organized and well supported. Very friendly organizers. Nicer medal than I expected and they had my favorite after-marathon refreshments - chocolate milk and chips!

"No frills but fun marathon" (about: 2015)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Western Maryland Rail Trail Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This marathon is part of a series of low key marathons and half marathons put on in the Mid-Atlantic region. There were about 70 marathoners and 130 half marathoners (entries were capped at 200). Course is entirely on paved rail trail through woods near Potomac River and C&O Canal. Marathoners started 30 minutes before half marathoners and ran out and back twice. Since you are on the edge of mountains, it was gradual incline out each time and gradual decline back each time. Temperature at start was 37 and 65 at finish. Pros: (1) Small race in the woods (2) Friendly runners and race directors (3) Water stops with water. Gatorade, M&Ms, cookies, etc. (4) Parking close to start (5) Packet pick-up available morning of race (6) No road crossings to worry about Cons: (1) Hand timed (no chips) (2) Double out and back for marathoners (3) Shirt - plain white, no year, looks to be cotton and not technical shirt (4) Medal - could be more event specific |
