"Great town, challenging course" (about: 2018)

This was my 12th marathon and definitely the most challenging. Like all Rock N Roll events, very well organized and staged. We had a lot of fun in Liverpool (my daughter ran the 1/2M),great restaurants and a lot of history beyond the Beatles.

The weather was perfect but a little on the warm side. I thought I was well trained on the rolling hills where I run, but the elevation chart doesn't due justice to the difficulty. The early hills at 8 and 12 definitely took a little out, but some of the downhills also took a toll. The downhill after mile 20 had the sharpest drop, and both of my quads starting twitching (a first). Based on my training times doing 20M, I should have been faster by at least 20 minutes. I am not suggesting that you not do this run, It was a great race, just temper your time expectations.

My daughter ran the 1/2 (which started earlier) and had a blast on a course with a lot less hills, if I could have done it differently I would have used Liverpool as a 1/2M training run and looked for a flat fast for the M.

I am a Beatlemaniac so I combined running this marathon with doing all things Fab Four in Merseyside. I ran this marathon on May 28, 2017. Brilliant. It was my third Rock 'n' Roll marathon. Everything was well-organized, the crowd support was awesome, the weather was ideal, and, most important, I finished. My wife and I did the Airbnb thing in Wavertree, which put us away from tourists like us, but it was close enough to the Albert Dock, the start of the marathon. I did the Remix Challenge, which consisted of the 5K on Saturday and the marathon on Sunday. I received a medal for each, and a third, guitar-shaped medal as a bonus. A few notes. Scousers are great. Liverpool is hilly. Very hilly. Extremely hilly. I train in Northern Virginia, which is also hilly but doesn't compare. Also, the path along the Mersey River at approximately miles 23-25, the Promenade, is paved with bricks that caused my right knee to stiffen. But I stopped, massaged my knee, and finished. A splendid time!

"Nice tour of Liverpool!" (about: 2015)

I was admittedly a little hesitant regarding running my first R&R Marathon. It seems runners either love or hate these 'cookie cutter' events, but I have to say that I had a great time. On a downside, the Expo was very weak and you'd think there would be more local commercial interest. The course was a BIG positive from the starting (& finishing venue) around the docks and Echo Arena, the Liver Building, Goodison Park, Stanley Park, back down thru the Cavern District, Chinatown, Sefton Park, Penny Lane, and the last four miles along the Mersey. There were a few bands (and locals) scattered about for race support. The weather held out and was decent while the post race Marc Almond concert (with a pint in hand) was entertaining. And the post-post race around the vibrant Albert Docks and nearby pubs/restaurants was pretty good too. I stayed at the Atlantic Thistle which was an easy walk to everything and a great view! My last comment is in regards to all the bottles of water and Lucozade handed out at EVERY aid station. I know as a runner that these plastic bottles are convenient, but what a waste to see all those thousands of half full (or empty) plastic bottles scattered along the streets!

I really enjoyed this course it gives you a real taste of the different areas of Liverpool - football grounds, city centre and parks. It's not flat though! The organization was very good, I particularly like the start and finish at the echo arena. Lots of refreshments afterwards including a free beer. Great medal and T Shirt. Several mile markers were missing and there were not as many bands/DJs as advertised. Personally that doesn't bother me so didn't detract from the race. I think this can develop into a really great race with a bit more local support and advertising.
