This was the first time I've run a trail race and really enjoyed myself. Biggest challenge was the footing as you have to watch for a mix of tree roots, rocks, creeks and other objects on the paths. The atmosphere was laid back throughout the race. Loved the mix of single track, open fields and maintained wide trails. Post race had burgers, dogs, chips, fruit and soda pop. A lot of runners stuck around after they finished to grab a bite to eat and cheer on runners coming in for their finish. Nice finisher's medal and race shirt. Even gave pint glasses to the top 5 finishers in each age group. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed the entire experience at the Big Elk.

"Great first trail marathon" (about: 2014)

First trail marathon after having only run road races and was very impressed with the race... especially the course.

Lots of single track alternating areas that were rocky and heavily rooted, plentiful short but steep hills, and some open runs through high grass. Temperatures were mild for late June, but a thirty minute rain storm made the second loop especially interesting for the marathoners.

Great swag with hydration belt and choice of short sleeve or tank race shirts.

Difficult to have fans present due to the layout of the heavily wooded course, but they were great when present.

Only recommendation would be a more efficient race morning registration process.

Extremely well organized race with well stocked and frequent aid stations, easy logistics and great pre-race communication. Tremendous shirt and medal and plenty of food post race.
The star of this race is the course. Lots of cool single track trail divided by runs through open fields which kept the scenery interesting and changing. One of the few races that I am likely to repeat. Great job.

Trail run through the trees with some steeps, but nothing unbearable. My only marathon to give out a hydration backpack, in addition to many other goodies.

The RD was very accomodating and made me feel special and appreciated. Many people ran the half marathon and they missed out ... I just really love the course.
