"Excellent course and experience! Must do race!" (about: 2017)

I traveled from Virginia to participate in The Barrel Marathon, one of many running selections a participant can choose during registration for the Whiskeydaddle Races in Peoria, IL on 7-8 October, 2017. This is a must-do event that includes the best of everything. Race details from packet pickup at the local running store to the post-race concert on the Peoria riverfront were second to none. Parking adjacent to the start/finish area was plentiful and free. My hotel was very nice and affordable, and it was only a 5 minute walk to the start. Abundant porta-potties and adjacent public restrooms at the start/finish area were available with minimal waiting. The course is fast, marked incredibly well, and includes a scenic view of the city and its charming neighborhoods and parks. Hydration stations were plentiful, and the volunteers were spectacular. Peoria Police were present at all major intersections ensuring runner safety, and many offered encouragement while passing. And, a concert by Matt Nathanson and two openers included with your registration?? Yes! An amazing event in every way. And 50-Staters - if you need to mark Illinois off your list, do yourself a favor and pick Peoria - having run this marathon and Chicago, the runner experience in the Whiskeydaddle Races was phenomenal - so much so, I have already registered for 2018! Well done!

"B+ Race. Food was lacking." (about: 2015)

This was an awesome race. The city itself was much more fun than I anticipated. There are a ton of awesome restaurants on the river front and in the surrounding area.

For the race itself, the course was great. Plenty of turns that were very well marked, which made it interesting. We ran through some fun neighborhoods. Water stops were plentiful and well stocked. People handed out sour patch kids, snickers, fruit, and GU. The finish line INSIDE the civic center was really stinking cool. I've never had a finish line like that before.

The medal, shirt, expo were all great. Being able to pick up your packet on Friday was very nice. Spectators were pretty solid for a race with only a few hundred marathoners.

The one negative was the post-race food. If the food was better, this would have been 5-stars. After I crossed the finish line I kept asking people where the food was. The only food was oranges, bananas, and granola bars. That just doesn't cut it.

Ultimately, you should really consider running this race. If they fix the food situation, there's no reason this can't become a really big race.

"Small Town, Big Charm" (about: 2015)

This race was fantastic and a must-do if you are looking for a small town, low key event. The course was primarily residential with plenty of turns and scenery to keep me engaged. The spectators were outside there homes and some gathered on corner blocks, all offering words of encouragement and some cheers. Water stations were plentiful. There were police officers or volunteers at every corner and turn. Only con is that the mile markers were small and placed on the ground. Most runners had GPS, so not a huge deal. Would definitely do this one again.

I am a walker and only 2 finished behind me (5:49). Yet, every volunteer, law enforcement officer and course official was good to me. All aspects (markings, traffic control, aid, on course bathrooms) were excellent. The course features on good hill (mile 7) and one long upgrade (17 to 20); the last 2 miles are down hill.

The course featured downtown, neighborhoods and a park.
One note: the 5K runners had a lot of complaints so if you are one of those people that has a friend/loved one do the 5K while you do the marathon, contact the RD

"Enjoyable race but very small and few spectators." (about: 2014)

This was an enjoyable race in general. Has a couple of challenging hills which will likely effect the average runners time. Found myself alone at times on the road with virtually no spectators. Probably not a race I'd do again. Maybe the half-marathon instead.

This is a small (280 this year) marathon, but the organization and volunteers, and neighborhood crowd support was top notch. If you're looking for a midwest spring marathon check out Peoria.

I drove 8 hours to do this race and it was well worth the drive! The course was easy. I ran with a pacer and he was great. The spectators were so nice. I was very pleased with it and would recommend as a first marathon or a PR course.

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

I ran the 5K as my son ran the half marathon. Was a great day, especially since it was my first race and was so cool to run a race with my son who got me started running. The one thing that would help the marathoners and half marathoners would be Gatorade instead of just water earlier in the course and probably at the finish. My son did well but was a bit dehydrated. Also, any hope of adding a 10 K race? I felt I barely got started with the 5K!

"good smaller marathon" (about: 2014)

Just ran this marathon today. There were many positives. Plenty of water stops, Not too hilly of a course, nice tech shirt and support nice medal. Organized just fine, No glitches I saw. Only negative I could see some have is no timers on the course. I wear GPS like many so I didn't need it, but would be frustrated had I not. I would recommend.

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

I am from Brooklyn, NY and signed up for Peoria Marathon only so I could also visit my brothers that live in Pekin, about 10 miles from Peoria. I am glad that I ran this marathon. I want to make it a yearly thing so I can: 1. Run a spring marathon, 2. Visit my brothers, 3. Run a kiddie race with my 6 and 5 year old nephews after finishing the marathon. Spectators were great, hydration stops plenty, but mile markers were off, but that is not important, you know how far you have come and how far is left to go. I am hoping that marathon day 2014 is a bit cooler.
