The application for the ING New York City Marathon 2012 will launch on Monday, January 2, just in time to be a part of 2012 New Year's Resolutions, it was announced today by NYRR. The 43rd running of the five-borough spectacle, watched by more than 2.5 million spectators and a global TV audience, will take place on Sunday, November 4. The application window for the 2012 event will open on Monday, January 2, at 12:00 noon (EST) and close on Monday, April 23 at 11:59 p.m. (EDT).

New rules for guaranteed entry into the ING New York City Marathon, beginning with the 2012 event, have been announced by New York Road Runners officials. Due to the increasing worldwide popularity of marathon running, in recent years the ING New York City Marathon has experienced a significant increase in applicants for guaranteed entry, reducing the number of non-guaranteed entries. Analysis shows that if this trend continues, within five years New York Road Runners will no longer be able to offer non-guaranteed entry.

Meb Keflezighi ran the 2011 New York City Marathon again after winning the race in 2009. He set the bar fro all other Americans in the race by crossing the line in 2 hours 9 minutes and 13 seconds: a new personal best.
