"Great Race" (about: 2015)

I have run this marathon all three years and it is only getting batter. Well organized and great support. The weather has been incredibly bad luck the last 2 years, but it can only get better too.

"Cold day, decent race" (about: 2015)

This race is poised to grow. Talking with the RD, you can see he is dedicated to its success. I saw a lot of positives for a 3rd year race. This year had a few execution issues, but I think that can get sorted out.

Organization - Generally good. The expo location is easy to get to and the expo flowed nicely, professional. Plenty of volunteers both on and off the course. Host hotels in both cities (point to point course). They actually used coach busses for shuttles, didn't cheap-out on school busses...nice. While some people complained about waiting, they had a good excuse. Talking to one of the bus drivers the bus company had 2 buses stranded in the DFW area due to weather...entirely outside of the RDs control.

On the topic of weather - those of us who live in central/south Texas know that the only guaranteed weather in February and March is that you will get weather. On Saturday morning the forecast called for 40's at the start with mid-50's at finish...well, it was 32 at the start and 38 at the finish. Hard to fault the RD for not having warming tents etc. Did the best they could given the situation and the ever changing forecast.

Course - It's quiet and rural for the most part. Very few spectators. The dam is neat with good views, otherwise some rolling farmland and residential areas. Just enought hills to break it up, only one of any substance at Mile 17. Well spaced aid stations.

What could be better? Think the finish area could be improved. It's in a remote area with not alot going on. Only had a few tents set up, soggy ground. Cold weather made it worse, but you feel like you finished in an open field with nothing around you.

Medal was nice, a little disappointed by awards (no AG awards that I could see).

Good race if you are local, there are better in Texas if you are out of town. Some tweaks and this can be better.

"Very Thankful to this race!" (about: 2015)

The course is a point to point course, which is a net downhill though you won't realize that while running the uphills. There's not much to see, but the dam is gorgeous. You run through several cities.

It was a wet and cold day and while there were not a lot of spectators, those who were there were enthusiastic, especially in the first couple cities.

The RD kept the expo open late so runners displaced by the Cowtown cancellation were able to register, and those delayed by traffic. Wonderful move that certainly was not expected. Thank you! This allowed me to get in a TX marathon after coming all the way to get cancelled on at the very last second by Cowtown.

Parking was easy. You could wait in the warm building. This is one of the few races where there seemed to be a surplus of clean restrooms both before and along the course.

There were little throwaway branded rainjackets given out along the course and at the finish. VERY nice touch.

I wish they would change the sports drink. My stomach did not handle it well. I'm not sure what it was, but it was not Gatorade/Powerade.

The 5:00 pacer was supportive, steady, and did a generally excellent job.

The wait for shuttle back to the start was entirely too long. Forty plus minutes in the cold post run was entirely too long. Another would be appropriate.

I would recommend this race.

"Worse Awards Ceremony Ever!" (about: 2015)

50+ previous marathons | 1 The Army Marathon

I have ran over 200 races and this is the first time I have ever complained. 5K runners waited 3.5 hours for award ceremony only to be told that awards were not brougt. No awards for age group winners in marathon/half. Race director never spoke to runners. Ten chairs in tent for runners. Were we expected to sit on cold wet muddy ground? Grandmaster to over 60 Runner's World defines GM as over 50. Some runners had to change buses three times. No race officials at bus loading zone.

"Can Do Attitude. Army Strong." (about: 2014)

3 previous marathons | 1 The Army Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Overall organization, rest stops and volunteers were outstanding, especially considering the brutal weather conditions of plummenting tempertures, driving mists and finally thunder and lightning! The course was challenging (at least to this Fla flatlander) with rolling hills and strong headwinds. The weather also washed out the post race party so I can't comment on that. Weather aside I would give this two thumbs up and hope it continues to grow. Also some more Army presence would be nice. None of the events or the course went through the base, and the uniformed presence was almost non existent.

"Great organization" (about: 2014)

1 previous marathon | 1 The Army Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first marathon and I must say that the organizers thought of everything to make this race run as smoothly as possible. The forecast called for a cold front coming in during the race, with sleet and lightning, and for as often as weather forecasts are wrong, this was not the day. The organizers, however, communicated often and provided runners with jackets during the course and heat tents at the finish line. The course was very well marked, police officers or volunteers were at every intersection, medical personnel were on hand, water stations every two miles with a couple gel stations as well, and the few spectators along the route were amazing. The course has rolling hills but with decreased elevation. I plan on running this race again next year. Hopefully, mother nature will cooperate.

"Army Strong, 'Can Do' Attitude!" (about: 2014)

A challenging course of rolling hills (at least for this Floridian) made more difficult by driving mist and near freezing temps. However the volunteers, which probably outnumbered the runners, were outstanding and inspirational! Course and traffic control was also great. Weather washed away the post race party so I cannot comment on that, but the pre race organization and the marathon was very well done. I just wish the Army would be more active in participating in this event. It would have been nice to have some events on Ft Hood and run through parts of the base like the AF Marathon.

"Mother Nature was not funny!!!" (about: 2014)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 The Army Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

If the weather would not have turned so quickly the race would have been much more enjoyable. The volunteers were marvelous, upbeat, no less then wonderful. It was such a crappy. cold, ugly day and they were just so welcoming to see. There weren't many spectators for obvious reasons but the ones that were out there were great. The officers and road guard were awesome too. The medics Tents at the end were VERY helpful as well, I was grateful to get a blanket and warmish(cause of the door opening all the time) tent to sit in for a few minutes. If it weren't for all the positive I'm not sure I would have made it through. THANKS YOU GUYS, YOUR ALL AWESOME!!!! Oh and I'm not sure I like where the race ends, makes it VERY hard for one to find their ride as everything is blocked off. Couldn't it end closer to the large parking lots near Airport Rd. and of course Mother Nature didn't make it easy either.

"Great for an inaugural race!" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 The Army Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

I have run several inaugural races and was pleasantly surprised at how well organized this one was. The weather was awesome and uncharacteristically cool for this time of year in central TX. I am thrilled that they have moved it back to March next year since I wasn't planning on running it again because of the typical TX heat. The police presence was outstanding and water stops plentiful. My only disappointment was that besides the name, there was very little that would let you know you were running the ARMY marathon...no Army band playing, no soldiers in uniform handing out medals at the finish line like the marines at the Marine Corp Marathon. All in all, it was a good experience and my husband and I plan on running it again next year. Go ARMY!!!

"A must do race" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 The Army Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This is the fifth inaugural marathon I have participated in and by far it was the best. What was written on their web page is what happened; everything was well prepared, no surprises, no aggravations.

Volunteers were excellent and plentiful.
Sheriff's Department did a great job of keeping the cars and runners separate.
The course route great; mostly downhill and through the back roads of Texas.

There were many of our Military runners. These young men and women have such a respectful, humorous, and helpful attitude they are a pleasure to run with. They really help pass the miles and keep each other going.
