"Nice Training Run" (about: 2013)

This race reminded me of the old days when the race director put down a line on the road and said 'run until you see the finish line'. Not bad at all unless you are expecting the experiences of a major marathon. I loved the aid stations at about every 1.5 miles. And enjoyed how friendly everyone was. A solid training styled run for me. It is a marathon that has the chance to grow, but will need more 'stuff' if it does grow.

"Organizational disaster" (about: 2013)

This race was an organizational disaster. I trained hard for this race and seeing that it was a flat course was attempting to break 2:40. I ran the race completely by myself the whole time, and at most of the water stops the volunteers weren't ready for me and there were several times I didn't get anything to drink. I ended up winning the race and had myself clocked at 2:40:15 with my garmin watch, but the timers of the race had me at 2:41:46; which I notified them of the discrepancy and got no response. The next day I woke up and read the newspaper which had an article written about the marathon and was written about some other guy winning the race! I understand mistakes happen but there were several mistakes made in this race. I called the company that puts this race on two days after the race and talked to a customer service rep and made it clear that I would like to hear a response; which I have still not received... This is a race that has promise and I think can grow, but with the laziness and mistakes of the organizers it is a race I would skip at this point.

Wow, what to say about the Panhandle Marathon? Came to town to visit friends and run TX for the 50 states goal I am going after.

It's surprising that this marathon doesn't attract more runners, especially with the size of Lubbock. I doubt more than 200 runners showed up for the 7:30am marathon start this year.

First of all, smallest expo I have ever been to, which doesn't really matter. The start/finish line were still being set up the morning of the race and volunteers were pointing people in different directions for where the marathon start was located. Race finally started about 5 minutes late, no fanfare which is OK. As for the course, it is run around desolate, industrial, highway on/off ramps of Lubbock. Maybe this is all the town has to offer? Aid stations had water & Gatorade. Intersections were partially maintained. Wouldn't surprise me if someone got hit by a vehicle if they keep running this course...you run with some fast traffic! Campus is nice, but not much beyond that. Finally, the finish was OK. Finisher cotton shirt given out and a medal with no date.

What really was upsetting was the promises made/broken.
Promise: 'Greatest Post-Race Food' = A cup of water. No joke, there was no food at the end of the race.
Promise: 'All races started by the masked rider.' = Late start with guy with bullhorn.

Overall, minimal race that I would deem OK.

"Race Company Too Experienced For This Outcome" (about: 2013)

I recommend that you all read the comments regarding the Tyler Marathon and Big D Marathon races which also produces this race. Had I read them this would not have been my choice. If you want to run a race just for kicks and are local to the area then I think it is ok to participate in these races. If you have trained hard and invested a lot of time and money I suggest selecting a marathon produced by a company with a bit more experience. Late set up, late start, poor signage, bad directions by volunteers (I was directed the wrong way adding three miles to my course), lack of clear instructions. I am an advanced competitor who would have won age group at this race had it not been for this error so this is not my first rodeo. I am also an adventure racer so I expect to need a map for those races...not for a road race.
